Today we’d like to introduce you to Lux P.
Lux, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Curiosity and kind humans.
I’ve always been passionate about design. I saw how it positively impacted people and I wanted the opportunity to be a part of that. When I see others believe in me, that makes me slightly believe in me too.
When I was in middle school, Ms. Sweeney, my art teacher/friend always challenged me to try new design techniques in class, embrace the failures and successes and ultimately to always remember to stay curious. In high school, she gave me the opportunity to paint a mural in her classroom and walked me through every step from ideation to execution. Every time I would take a step back from the mural, I realized there was another mistake I made but I never noticed it when I was inches away. She never pointed out the mistakes because she wanted me to understand that the process is where all the learning happens. So, in high school, I tried sculpture, painting, drawing, drafting, pottery and really anything art related. Ms. Herrick, my high school art teacher/friend helped me narrow down my passion for design – specifically architecture and graphic design. And I somehow ended up at SCAD.
SCAD allowed me to be a creative weirdo. My freshman year, I started off with a major in Architecture and a minor in Graphic Design. I also took courses in motion media, interior design and printmaking that somehow led me to graduate with BFA in Graphic Design. I learned so much in four years, met a lot of talented friends (mainly while pulling all-nighters) and really found my passion. My Graphic Design professors/friends helped me realize what thoughtful and purposeful design means, what alternative design methods can be used to solve design problems and how I can build my own design process.
Has it been a smooth road?
Hmm… I would say there were a few fun bumps, ya know? It’s what makes life interesting. One of the most recent learning opportunities I experienced was in Wisconsin. After I graduated I moved to Madison, WI for my first job to work at a design agency. I really enjoyed living there, met friends and was really grateful for the job. Six months later, I got laid off. Fortunately, Maharaj and Swami, family and friends helped me stay positive and motivated to continue exploring new job opportunities. Even though it seemed like things were going downhill, it was just the beginning!!!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m a Designer at Target HQ in Minneapolis. I work on Target owned brands – focusing on graphic/product design and development. I’m proud to work at a company that focuses on the guest experience in every way. Being able to solve design problems and create products that helps our guests – helps me see the impact that design has on everyone’s day to day life.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
It’s definitely a place where you will find a sense of belonging. There are so many communities that are growing and places to explore. Pursuing your passion in a city like Atlanta allows you to pull inspiration from things right in front of you. I really enjoyed living in Atlanta!
