Meet Davion Mauzy of Mauzy Music in College Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mauzy Music.

Mauzy Music, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Well, for me, it all started with the cypher. I can still remember the feeling I had when I first saw one of my childhood friends surrounded by our classmates and even some of our teachers as he rapped at that lunch table in our middle school cafeteria. I think it was the first time I got that tingly feeling you get when you hear a singer hit the perfect note or something. The energy drew me in like it was God telling me that this was for me.

I was in a group for a while but when I went off to school at Middle Tennessee State University I was alone, and I realized I had to be my own person. I took this time in school to learn about the music business and develop my own unique sound and perspective. After graduating in December of 2017 with a Bachelors degree in Music Business, I went on tour for a little bit before I settled back down in Atlanta. After performing in all of these other dope cities, now I’m just looking forward to setting my city on fire.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No road worth taking is smooth in my opinion. Things happen that are sometimes out of our control but I believe the biggest bump in any road is ourselves.

Fear and discipline has held me back more than anybody else ever could. Like I said, many things can happen that are out of our control. There may be people that want to hurt you or see you stuck at a certain level for the rest of your life. It only makes sense that we try our best to control what we can control, which is ourselves.

The better I get at controlling my mindset, the more I notice that all of that other stuff just seems to move out of my way.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I do music. I specialize in making music that gives you that tingly feeling I was talking about earlier. If it’s not the words, it’s the melody. If it’s not the melody, it’s the beat. If it’s not the beat, it’s the combination of all three that makes you feel something spiritual. I’m known to especially convey this feeling at my live shows because you can tell that it’s real.

I guess that’s what separates me from others. I am genuinely being myself and speaking my truth. Not to say that no one else does, but everyone’s truth is different and if everybody is being 100% themselves, then no one would be 100% alike. I still have a lot of growing to do, but I can still say that I am honestly one of a kind. If you want to get to know the real me, a little bit just type in “Mauzy Music” on whatever platform it is that you listen to music on.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career so far is going on tour to 11 different cities in 2018 after I graduated from college. My favorite part of being an artist is performing the music that I make and connecting with new fans one at a time so the fact that we did it on our own with no funding and booking agents made it so much sweeter.

It was one of the most important moments of my life because I stepped out completely on faith. We didn’t have a bunch of money or a bunch of fans. I just had a few friends in a few cities and decided to take my music to each one of them and see what happened. There were a couple of cities that sucked, but most of those shows were some of the most fun times I’ve ever had on stage.

That was the first BIG WIN I had as an independent artist and I needed that coming fresh out of college to prove to myself that I could really do anything that I put my mind to, no matter how many people thought I couldn’t. Accomplishing anything in this music industry takes some amount of sacrifice, discipline, and money that I may or may not have, but I realized that if we want it enough, eventually we will make it happen.
