Today we’d like to introduce you to Robbie Grantham.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Ever since I was a kid, I loved creating things with my friends. We used to film sketches and really awful short films on a friend’s old VHS camera and edit it with the free trial of Adobe Premiere. I continued this in high school, working on the school’s news program and producing some educational videos that aired on the morning programming. After entering college, I became more and more involved in the Georgia hardcore/metal scene. I really enjoyed filming bands’ performances, and eventually asked some friends of mine in a band called After Me, The Flood if they’d be interested in letting me produce my first music video for them for free. It ended up being such an amazing learning experience and really got me hooked on the creative process of making music videos. That was in 2014, and since then, I’ve directed over 50 music videos for artists all across the country.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There are always ups and downs when it comes to running a business; you hit a dry spell and feel like you’re losing your touch, and then you suddenly have 10 projects within a few weeks time span. I always felt confident in the performance side of my music videos, but because I never had any formal training in film school with telling stories, I felt that the narrative side of my videos was lacking. The old saying that practice makes perfect is so true; I’ve learned over the years what works and what doesn’t, and I’ve finally started to gain confidence in my ability to tell a story within a music video.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I run a videography company called Angle Media that’s based out of Douglas, GA and specializes in creating music videos for underground rock artists. I work a lot in the realm of metalcore and hardcore punk and love creating weird/abstract videos that leave viewers asking questions. I’m really proud of the relationships I’ve built while pursuing my dream; I’ve had the chance to meet and work with some really amazing, gracious artists that inspire me to reach further and grow as a creative. I think what sets me apart from other videographers is my dedication to the artist; I do everything I possibly can to carry out and enhance the vision that they come to me with. I try to treat each client as less of a customer and more of a friend/creative partner. I find that when you respect someone else’s art and can relate to it, they reciprocate and give you the creative freedom to make something truly special.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always the shy kid with his nose buried in a book. As I got older, I was introduced to classic horror films by my dad and developed a deep love for horror films and all things scary, which I still have today. Eventually, I began to open up more and began my musical journey in middle school after receiving a mix CD from a friend. Nowadays, I’m hooked on music and love writing and recording in my home.
Pricing:
- Pricing is always dependent on the client’s budget, what kind of concept they want to shoot for, etc. There isn’t really a one-size-fits-all price, but it generally runs around $1000-$2000.
