Today we’d like to introduce you to Ronnie ” Double ATL” Rolon.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My life was a roller coaster growing up. From losing my father at six to moving down south away from everything I knew. I carried that for a while. I was always pretty popular, but there was always a void. Music was always an escape for me. I always knew I would entertain somehow, but it wasn’t till 2002 that I realized it would be through Hip Hop music. Struggling with my faith walk, I stumbled into an awards show in ATL called “Holy Hip Hop Awards & Showcase’ and found people who looked like me openly displaying their faith through the art form I grew up on. I was in! I released my first album in 2004 and been grinding ever since.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I dealt with rejection really heavy early on. That rejection thing does not go well with the life of an artist. Music-wise, finding a sound that is original and authentic to you and not conforming to the “popular” sound has been a struggle at times. Also, the lack of a budget makes it hard to market and promote, but we find a way to keep it moving.
Please tell us about City Takers/HisStory Music Group – what should we know?
I love using my music to reach people. I’m part of a really dope team called City Takers. We specialize in urban outreach. We do a lot of homeless, prison, and community work. I’ve used my story and music to reach those who feel forgotten. Gone places most churches won’t go. Being independent, I’ve also had some great opportunities. Shared stages with some prominent artist like Fred Hammond, Montell Jordan, Royce Da 5’9 & more. My record “Paper Planes” spent 15 weeks on Billboard. I released ” Stay Afloat” with 90’s R&B star Montell Jordan.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I always point to God for the credit. I know where I’m from and the things I’ve done, I never thought I would be in the place I am now. My mother is really an inspiration to me. She’s a real one. She raised us on her own. She showed me how to be relentless, I also have some great mentors at my home church, Victory World in Norcross. As well as great brothers who keep me accountable and keep me grinding. Shout out to the group chat!
