Today we’d like to introduce you to Shalonda Barnett.
Shalonda, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I had no idea I could enjoy something so much as I do. Unfortunately, as a young girl I had no passion to do any ONE thing but fortunately, I had an aunt in the wonderful profession of massage therapy. I would go to Chicago during the summer and schedule appointments,turn tables and do any misalliance task for her. Not realizing I was being groomed for something great. At the end of my senior year I decided to go to school for massage and never looked back. After completing a 9 month course I then moved to Chicago and practice under my aunt for 7 years. In 2008 I decided to move back to Atlanta and after working for two great establishments and the encouragement of family and friends THTH was founded in 2016.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It took me five times to pass the national exam for massage therapy. With the help of a tutor and the Bodies exhibit, I finally passed.
Please tell us about Two hands To Heal.
My little baby is what I consider Two Hands To Heal. It’s a therapeutic massage center where I specialize in Swedish, Deep Tissue, Myofascial Release, and my favorite Pregnancy massage. Using these techniques I strongly encourage clients to look at massage not as a luxury. Our techniques help the clients become more in-tuned to their bodies.The massage sessions are very informative and I encourage clients to ask questions so they can get the most out of each service.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well-positioned for?
I feel like we can do all things.You just have to believe in yourself and put the work in.
