Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Murray.
Ashley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The idea of DJing stemmed from a conversation with someone close to me. We were exchanging our favorite songs and speaking about the genres of music that pulls us most. Along with recognizing the love and culture of vinyl and the digital platform, the ability of music to move and touch people wasn’t changed much. It was an ah-ha moment that struck me to pursue this on a larger scale. I started by slowly networking at live DJ events around the city. I began to express my interest in the art of DJing to those I encountered and asked for insight. I bought my first controller in May of 2018 and began to perfect my craft.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, no journey worth taking ever is. You will experience setbacks and roadblocks but that’s what will build character. I have had a few instances DJing events were technical issues arose and I had to be quick with solutions under pressure. Another example is the struggle of finding your niche and brand.
For women entering into this industry, I will say do not be discouraged. It is a male-dominated field but as women, we possess a different touch and style that can be brought to the table. Always stay true to yourself and find your voice.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am most proud of curating a musical experience for my clients and any event that I may be apart of. I specialize in the blending of all genres old and new, to be able to touch all demographics while I DJ is the goal.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Stay true to your core and your voice. Don’t compare and practice. Do what feels right for you.
