Today we’d like to introduce you to Carmel Moore.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Carmel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Well, it all started with a dream to work in radio or TV. Originally, I had planned to become an on-air radio DJ or a TV show host; so, I went to college for broadcast communications. That led to internship opportunities with two major hip hop & R&B radio stations in the San Francisco Bay Area where I worked in the promotions department. Between my college education and the internships, I learned a ton about how to create content, network, and promote myself, which would come in handy later on in my life.
Fast forward some years later (after a brief military enlistment, having some kids, relocating to Georgia, and getting remarried), I decided to get back to my creative roots, this time taking up an interest in photography. My husband, knowing how much I loved to take pictures, surprised me with my very first Canon DSLR camera as a Christmas gift in 2011, and from that moment on, I was hooked!
I taught myself how to shoot in manual mode and how to compose compelling images with the help of books, YouTube, and various photography websites. Not long after that, I discovered the world of lifestyle blogging and noticed that many of the women who were running their own lifestyle blogs were also self-taught photographers. I just knew that starting a lifestyle blog was the next logical move for me as a photographer and content creator.
So, in the spring of 2019, I launched my lifestyle brand, Carmel & Company, where I share an inside look at my life as an Atlanta-based creative entrepreneur blogging about topics such as motherhood, entrepreneurship, and work-life balance.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but what’s life without a few bumps along the way, right?
One of the struggles that I faced early on was dealing with imposter syndrome (you know that uncomfortable feeling that you get when you don’t quite feel accomplished enough to label yourself as a professional?). I remember feeling very confident in my writing skills and my abilities as a photographer, but it was like I was waiting for some special sign that I was now officially a professional photographer or officially a real blogger.
Reality is, no one’s going to come over to give you an official stamp of authenticity; that is something that you have to do for yourself.
Please tell us about Carmel & Company.
Carmel & Company is a lifestyle brand on a mission to inspire and teach enterprising, creative women how to nurture and grow their brands while living a life they truly love. At the end of the day, I just want to see women winning in all facets of their lives, whether it’s as mothers, business owners or hobbyists.
I think what sets my brand apart from what similar brands are doing is the fact that I’m sharing more than just tips and resources for growing a brand; I’m also equipping women with tools that will help them to level up in other areas of their lives so that they can achieve happiness and find work-life balance.
As a fairly new brand on the scene, I am most proud of where Carmel & Company is headed. So far, I have several upcoming brand collaborations in the works, an interview series that I will be dropping this fall, a product line that I’m super excited about launching, and a host of networking and social events that are set to take place here in Atlanta later this year. Business is good, so I’m pretty happy!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Hmm. I don’t know if I have just one favorite memory from my childhood, but as a child growing up with a father who was in the Army, I spent my early childhood living on a U.S. Army base that sat right at the edge of the Pacific Ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge.
One of my fondest memories is riding my bike to the base of the Golden Gate Bridge to watch the sailboats sail through the foggy air and feel the salty mist of the ocean water against my skin as the waves splashed against the stone wall that separated me from the ocean. It was all pretty surreal. That military base has since shut down and is now a national park.
