Meet Darrell Spear of Giabani Luxury Brand in Midtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darrell Spear.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
How I created my brand? I always wanted to have a brand since I was younger about 8th grade as far as I could remember. I started drawing shoes with my initials on it. Fast forward to summer 2016, I was sitting in my apartment drawing a name on a piece paper and I finally told my friend- Producer Tay Keith, I wanted to be a fashion designer and created a brand, so he said ok and help create my first logo to put on a shirt. After that, I was on and off with coming up with the perfect brand. If I couldn’t see my brand on anything, I threw it out the water. Until 2018, I finally created the perfect brand that I am most proud of today, Giabani. When I created the name, I was sitting playing on my laptop and the first person I showed the name to was my friend Dj Meech. I asked, “Yo, how does this name sound?” He said, “That’s hard, sounds like a real luxury designer brand.” Only my closes friends knew what my passion was. Next step was to get t-shirts made. I use my own money and bought 12 shirts with Giabani screen printed on and did a photoshoot to get the name out. After that, Giabani was out to the public, receiving positive feedback and support of friends and family. August 27, 2018, I launched my website because I wanted to have my brand on different apparel like, hoodies, sweatshirts, etc. so, I build my website through Shopify to get my brand out more. But I grew up poor, so I researched and found a way to make my Dream come true and to get money in my pockets using a company that made my products and shipped it out for me. In my eyes, it’s not about the money, it’s about the dream I’m chasing. Giabani is going global.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. I went from being depressed to feel discouraged because I didn’t think my brand was rising quick enough because I still felt broke. And then I am a college dropped out so it wasn’t like I had a degree to fall back on as plan B if my dreams didn’t work out . No, this is Plan A and the only plan I have to be successful. But my friend told me “you know why your brand will be big because your brand has longevity and you have your family/friends to support you along the way.” He told me don’t stress about it just have patience, everything will work out.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Giabani is a luxury brand that means Family. I created the meaning-based off my friends that I met in college. They are like family to me and they are the ones that uplift me the most and supports my dreams. I am a 23-year-old entrepreneur founder and CEO of the Giabani Luxury Brand. I am most proud of being independent for the most part but I have my friends to support and if I need help I know who to go to for. What sets me apart from others is my ability to keep going and to dream bigger than big.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in an all-women household. I was the baby of two older sisters and a single mother. I was the shy and quiet type of child that stayed to myself. I was interested in basketball and music but I feel like my passion for fashion became when I saw my mom trying to create a shirt from a drawing of a rose with her face in it. After that, she heat press it on and showed me the results. Eventually, I started drawing clothes and shoes with my name on it.
