Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashleeh (Leeh) Scrivens.
Ashleeh, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a Grand Rapids, Michigan native. Born and raised! I am a graduate of Thee Tennessee State University where I received my Bachelors of Science in Sociology in 2011. In 2013, I graduated from Clark Atlanta University with a Masters of Social Work. In 2014, I became a mother to the amazing, smart, and loving diva named Ryleeh. This single mother journey has been a tough one, but it’s pushed me never to settle and achieve my dreams as my cub is watching my every move. My desire for a career change started in 2015, I love social work and helping others, but my love for makeup and beauty has been present since the age of two. I was always in my mother’s makeup and hair supplies.
In 2015, I began watching YouTube; here I was self-taught on wig construction. I got frustrated at the prices and lack of quality I was paying to get wigs made. I had a thought one day, “Ash you were a Girl Scout! You got many badges for sewing girl, so you can make a wig sis”. That pep talk started what is now a business/side hustle for me. As far as the makeup aspect, I always received compliments on my makeup and natural skin. My mom is actually the person who pushed and motivated me to be a freelance makeup artist. My friends and family became my practice pallets. Once I dropped the fear of wondering “what if”, I made an Instagram business page displaying my wig and makeup work. This was in 2018, yes it took me a while to be confident in my work. Once I did that and received great feedback, I went the extra mile to teach others about skincare because your face should be flawless under the makeup as well. I’ve received so much love and support from Instagram alone, that I made a YouTube page (Leeh’s Beauty Bar) as well as a website, which serves as a beauty blog. I upload new content every Monday (makeup Monday). Here at LeehsBeautyBar.com, our skincare updates, skincare, and makeup product reviews, as well as a weekly demonstration on makeup application. With the support of friends, family, and social media, I have been blessed to do makeup for weddings, photoshoots, and date nights. This journey is nowhere near the end, I am just getting started and ready for the many other blessings and open doors in store.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t always been smooth. I’ve dealt with self-doubt in my gift. I still struggle with being a single mother and not losing sight of myself, my passions, and my goals. Sometimes, it’s easy to get so wrapped up in the daily routine of our lives and parenting that we don’t make time for ourselves and goals. These struggles have taught me to partake in self-care daily! If I’m not well and I’m stressed out then my role as a friend, mother, daughter, sister, etc fails and lacks. I have a great village that helps with the love and caring of my daughter, which helps me also be in tune with my goals and progress.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Leeh’s Beauty Bar – what should we know?
As stated before, I make wigs as well as do makeup. I have a beauty blog I update weekly on Mondays highlighting makeup allocation, skincare updates, and product reviews. I am most proud of my ability to reach p
Others. My social work background makes it natural for me to connect and build genuine rapport with clients while doing their makeup. We discuss so many things during a makeup session. What sets me apart from others is my passion and love for beauty. Beauty is not only displayed on the outside, but it’s rooted from within. Makeup enhances the beauty you already have, and that my goal to instill in people. Makeup just helps boost the confidence we have always had because when you look good, you feel good, when you feel good, you slay!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My faith in God. Without Him, I’d be a wreck in life. I am forever grateful and humble for all experiences in life I’ve been through. The good, bad, and ugly because they’ve all been lessons.
