Conversations with the Inspiring Janie Sloan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janie Sloan.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Janie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Being an actress is something I have always wanted to do since I was a kid, I used to reenact my favorite scenes on my favorite tv shows. But I grew up poor, which prohibited me from finding the right resources to work towards that dream, not to mention the lack of a support network. With that being said, my dream became a dream deferred. I decided to focus on my reality and that was graduating, getting married and having a family. I did just that. I got married and divorced young but got 2 beautiful children out of the deal. At the age of 26, I decided to take a few acting classes, just so I could learn the basics. I learned from my instructor that I was a natural. But again, I had to put my dream on hold to focus on my children. When my daughter was a junior in high school, she decided she wanted to act. So, I enrolled her into John Casablanca. The deal was that she could bring someone with her to class for free, so she asked me to join the class with her. The class didn’t cater to our needs so we decided to drop the class and branch out on our own with the little bit that we learned.

From there on, I started off by being extras in movies, even received a role as a prison inmate on Orange is the New Black, but I turned it down because they wanted me to get rid of my dreads, I then received 2 speaking roles on the TV series “Fatal Attraction” from there the Lord spoke to me and said stop auditioning for projects, because I’m trying to get it where people audition for yours. So, I started writing my own projects. My first project was titled the “Janie Sloan Show” it’s a comedy sketch show exposing Christian behavior. I play different characters. The character that stands out the most is when I play a male character named “The Pastor” I have a deep raspy voice, that at one time I was self-conscious about, so I decided to use it to my advantage and create this funny character. What inspired this character, was the fact that men like Tyler Perry, Martin Lawrence, Jamie Foxx, and Jordan Peele, all played female characters, but you never see a woman with a male character. So, I decided to be the first. And from there, I started my production company “Quit Playing Production” the name came from my decision to quit playing with God. I began to submit to his plan for me and kept writing. I wrote a Tv sitcom that I’m waiting to film, titled Jane and Fam. After the word got out that I was a good writer, I received a phone call from a starting producer in South Carolina, asking me to write a film on Domestic Violence and Stalking. So, I wrote the film, title Take A Stan” we casted the film and we finished filming it in January 2019. The film has been submitted to several festivals and have received nothing but great reviews! Not one bad review! So, my dream now is to continue creating films so I can help actors and actresses live their dreams and create jobs for people all over the world.

Has it been a smooth road?
It is never a smooth road in this field. I have also learned a lot on this journey. I have been experiencing nothing but rejection for my film “Take A Stan” so far. But I have also won 2 honorable mention awards. I know this film will be picked up and distributed because it is a great film based on actual events. And it’s a story that needs to be heard and told in hopes it blesses someone that could be experiencing or have a family or friend that could be experiencing this issue. The advice I give for other women is to never give up on your dream. Obstacles are there to make you stronger, not to make you give up. Make sure you are passionate about whatever it is that you are trying to do because the love for it makes it easier to handle rejection. Just keep believing in what you’re doing and just continue until you come across the right person that will believe in you too and give you that chance to shine!

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a writer, director, and actress. But I am also a nurse first. Until I make it big, I have my fall back plan that pays the bills. and I am known for exposing Christian behavior through comedy. And I always create films with happy endings. My films are Christian based but stress on real heartbreaking. Issues, not delicate issues like “War room,” and “Overcomers. ”I’m trying to send a message through my films to reach the “hard to reach” audience. That is what sets me apart from others. What I am most proud of is my accomplishments in creating projects that no one ever thought of, that people enjoy and understand.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
The only resources I use to help me do my best in life is just watching Tv and movies. And what I don’t know about the industry I learn from the few celebrity friends as made throughout my journey.
