Today we’d like to introduce you to Joycelyn Wells.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always been an avid reader and writer; though, I never attempted to write a book, just journal entries and letters to pen pals. Reading allowed me the opportunity to travel to different parts of my mind and the world. Those visions were enhanced through pictures of said places found in encyclopedias. It was through the development of that skill that I became so interested in word placement and descriptions. I mean even now in most situations, I think, “How would I write this if I were telling someone about it? How can I get them to see what I see?” I literally want the reader to experience every nuance of pleasure that feel.
One afternoon, I was riding in the car with my #facelesslove, after reading from various forms of media, I began to read a story that I had began to write about a gentleman friend giving me a bath. As I was reading, I noticed that he would grip the steering wheel and release it, almost anticipating the next sentence. He interrupted my story with “Babe? Did you write that?” I was kinda embarrassed because I wasn’t sure of what would follow if I responded yes. Instead of answering his question, I just continued to read until there was anything left. He repeated his question. I answered.
He went on to say, “If you wrote that, you are officially my favorite author. That was brilliant.” I listened to his accolades and smiled. And for the remainder of the ride, all I could think about was finishing the story just for him.
And I did. Once I completed that story, others began to flow effortlessly. Eventually, I had a whole book… “The Virtues of Joy, a compilation of short stories.” And just like that, I became an author.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has definitely been eventful! I’m at a point in my life that I welcome the bumps and bruises. Honestly, I’m not sure if the difficult times were struggles because all of it was brand new to me. Therefore, knowing that I was treading in a space, I welcomed the new experiences and opportunities.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Well, when I published my first book, it was for me. Just me. Within six months, I was publishing for another new author and that began www.shapepublishing.com.
As a company, I am most proud of having new authors trust me with their words. I spend time talking to each of them prior to offering a proposal because I need to sure that they are aware of the services we offer.
My publishing company’s goal is to promote growth of the author’s in the areas of Self, Health and Personal Empowerment. We maintain the belief that our words set us free.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Integrity.
I am only as good as my words. Personally, I strive to be my greatest self. That means traveling with purpose along my path and building relationships with those who have gifts (i.e., information, tools, time) for my journey. When participating in an exchange, I must believe that I have shared honestly and intentionally.
