Today we’d like to introduce you to G. Torres.
G. Torres, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in the city of Fayetteville, NC which most people would either know because of J. Cole being from there or Fort Bragg Army Base if you’re military. I gravitated towards music once I learned about poetry as a kid. being fascinated with the ability to make words rhyme. Unfortunately, a couple of months after making the move to NC when I was seven, I lost my mother to the hands of my father which took both parents out of me and my younger sisters life. The effects of it left me with no real guidance and a lot of pain but little to nowhere to express it or anyone to speak to about it. This is what led me to writing. Writing which led to creating music and falling in love with developing my craft and becoming a true artist.
The idea of lion side music group simply came from me wanting something I can call my own also the mindset that unless you’re signed to a major then your independent regardless. In 2016, I made it an independent record label and signed myself. Pushing myself and not waiting for a major label to sign me. In a day and time where the internet and technology has allowed independent artist to be self-sufficient, I’ve taken that leap into jump starting my career on my own. a year later I decided to make the move to Atlanta, which right now is arguably the mecca of music and entertainment so it was kind of a no brainer when I was presented with the opportunity to move here and take advantage of what Atlanta has to offer me as a Rap/Hip Hop artist.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road of being an independent artist is far from smooth. You’re investing 100% of everything. Time, money, sleep. You definitely sacrifice a lot to make a dream of yours a reality. Your constantly planning ahead for what’s next. Balancing time between your day job and your career while you’re trying to make the transition into making your dream full time. But you need to have income in order to invest in your career. Making sure you make all the right moves. Networking and connect with the right people that can help further your career and help build your fan base. Branding yourself, making sure everything you do is professional so that the fans and potential fans will take you serious at first glance. Taking care of the business part of your artistry so that you can get paid for your hard work.
All of this is outside of actually making the music, making sure that your content is actually great, something that people are going to love. Something that speaks to them. Makes them move. Makes them dance, cry, smile, laugh, a story that paints a picture for them or just something that makes them think or even something that blows their mind to the point that they say wow who is this guy, I need to support him. It eases the load when you have a team behind you but when your a one man band those hats put a lot of weight on your head.
Please tell us about Lion Side Music Group.
Lion Side Music Group is an independent record label I started in 2016. I am a Rap/Hip Hop artist. Specialize in making music. Known for my lyrical ability, storytelling ability inspired by my life, my outlook on situations and whatever creative content my mind can think of. What I’m most proud of with this label is that it allowed me to begin taking control of my career and giving me something I own 100%. I believe that what sets me apart from others is the content itself. What makes me different is what made me different. No one can tell my stories or deliver them the way I can so that you can get a clear visual of what led me to create what it is you are consuming.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I absolutely believe Atlanta is one of the best places to start a music career. There is so much opportunity here in Atlanta.
