Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Iverson.
Steve, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was bartending at Chops Lobster Bar in Buckhead in 2008 at night when the housing market went south, so I started working during the day with a couple of carpet cleaners to help supplement lost wages. I quickly realized I could do all this myself and started Hoverclean. After a couple of years, I realized that my clients and homeowners were moving towards hard surfaces and replacing their carpet, so I decided to move with them. Fortunately, my wife and I own a 100 years old house with hardwood floors throughout, and she gave me free reign to practice and learn. After countless YouTube videos and a house full of continuous sanded hardwood dust, every floor in every room has a unique style and color – a nightmare for most, but we love it! Now, Hoverclean is ten years old and is all hardwood floors and decks.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Home renovations and restorations are always bumpy. Hardwood floors are no different. Too many unforeseen variables. I’ve had a handful of smooth jobs – out of hundreds.
Please tell us about Hoverclean.
Hoverclean is a boutique hardwood floor restoration and deck weatherproofing company. I install new hardwoods and refinish old ones. I pressure wash, sand, and stain/seal decks. My love and my passion is restoring old hardwood floors in historic homes. The second I enter an old home I light up. The architecture. The construction. The love. The blood, sweat, and tears that went into building and maintaining this home is all within the walls and floors and structure of this beautiful piece of work. Families have spent lifetimes in these homes and have vivid memories of childhood’s past. It all tells a story, and I want to know some of it, and, ultimately be a part of it. Sometimes, that includes ripping up a rotted section of old flooring, salvaging what floorboards you can of the 100 years old hardwoods, installing new hardwoods to match the old while integrating or lacing the salvaged boards within the mix, sanding the entire floor, staining the new hardwoods, so they match in color to the old, and then staining and sealing everything, so it’s seamless.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing different, because I’m in a good place. I just wish I would have started earlier.
