Meet Kim Sandwich

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Sandwich.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kim. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
From the start of my childhood, I had an interest in art. It was at the age of five when I discovered how much I loved to sing and took that talent to the stage in my elementary school talent show. I can still remember the excitement in each of my young classmates’ faces, calling attention to the fact that they knew me, and the tears in the eyes of my music teacher and other faculty members as well as my parents. From that day forward, everyone I knew told me I had to sing — that it was what I was made to do.

Since my childhood days, I have significantly grown in my musicality. I have taught myself to play piano, guitar, and ukulele, and though I am still singing, applying my years of intensive vocal training, I have found my biggest passion to be in writing. I have been writing music since the fifth grade, although now I can confidently say that I actually like and appreciate the music I write.

Today, my passion for writing has grown into a magnificent flame, covering the wide span of music composition, screenplays, blogs, articles, and poetry. It’s because of this ever growing passion that led me to start my freelance writing company this year, and I couldn’t be more excited about it.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, it took a lot of mistakes to get to where I am now. After coming out of a hard season in my life ruled by severe anxiety and depression, I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my artistic ability. I spent years of my life trying to figure out what I was meant to be doing and not seeming to ever come up with a straight answer. I felt crippled. I felt like I was backsliding, losing a game I didn’t remember putting in the chips for. But after years of panic and despair regarding my career as an artist, I decided that the only way to get anywhere at all was to focus on one thing — any one thing that I truly enjoyed doing — and to just do it. Pushing through to the end of the project, whether the nerves are gone and creative juices are flowing or not, has proven to lead to the biggest successes in my life.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a freelance writer. I write blogs and articles for other companies as well as direct emails and other forms of copy and content building for online marketing. However, my life’s greatest passion is in screenwriting and music composition.

Being a freelance writer has been one of the greatest decisions of my life because for the first time, I’m actually making a profit creating work that I enjoy doing. Because creativity is constantly pulsing through my veins, it’s perfect to have an outlet to exercise my creative muscles and get paid to do it in the process.

What makes me different from other freelancers is that my passion is rooted in the heart of creative culture. Because I have such an eye for film and an ear for music — plus experience in both industries — and the stories I tell in my personal writing are loaded with creative and abstract ideas, my writing is saturated with new and refreshing hues of bright color that isn’t normally found in the everyday blog post or article.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Just writing. No matter what I feel like for the day or the week, I allow myself time each day to write. I personally like to use the faucet analogy: leave the water running. It may run muddy and murky, or sputter out with air bubbles, but the water must be left on. Otherwise, it will never have the opportunity to run clear and crisp. Whether or not the content is good at first is not so important as making sure I’m writing, because eventually, I do really enjoy the product. It just takes getting over myself — my fears, my doubts, my insecurities, my uninspired hours — and just creating. This is something I remind myself of every day, and living it out has never failed me.
