Meet Kimberly Turpin of Aiden’s Wagon in Alpharetta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Turpin.

Kimberly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am the mother of an awesome six-year-old boy named Aiden that happens to be on the Autism Spectrum. Aiden loves music and I found music was one of the only things that would calm him as a baby. When Aiden was two, I enrolled him into a music program. Our first visit Aiden had a melt down 10 minutes into the class. The instructor asked us to leave, and we did never to return. When I walked out of that class, I felt so humiliated, embarrassed and I felt I failed Aiden. I was hurt for my son, he did not understand what had just taken place.

I had Aiden evaluated shortly after the music class incident. He was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Speech and Language Delay and Sensory Processing Disorder. Once it all sunk in, I knew I had to be an advocate for my son. Although the music class incident was months prior, I could not erase it from my mind. It seemed more present since the diagnosis. I knew I had to do something.

I created Aiden’s Wagon for families on the Autism Spectrum. Children should have a judgment-free zone where they can be themselves. Families should not have a sinking feeling in the pit of their stomachs anticipating a “meltdown” and how they will be perceived. We have several events per year. All of our events are judgment-free zones. We want all children’s to have the best time they can.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a pretty smooth road. The only obstacles are wondering if we are reaching enough families and are providing those that we have connected with all that they need.

Please tell us about Aiden’s Wagon – what should we know?
Aiden’s Wagon is a non-profit organization that is committed to enriching the lives of individuals and families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders. Aiden’s Wagon provides support and empowerment to families.

We provide an opportunity for families to engage in activities that they would otherwise avoid for fear of being judged because their child’s behavior is not what is considered normal. For example each year one of our events is “Cookies and Cocoa with Sensitive Santa” families are able to bring their child with no lines, no rush to take a photo with Santa. We have other actives for the wait and you get to take your picture home. Every year, we hear how this is the first time a child has ever taken a photo with Santa and not be afraid.

What we are most proud of is what also sets us apart; all of our events are free. We have never charge our families for any of our events. Aiden’s Wagon understands the burden that the cost of Co-pays, Co-Insurance, therapy, and childcare, etc… has on the family budget.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Yes, I have had unwavering support from friends and family. I have been very blessed to have such committed support. My unofficial event planning committee consists of Brigitte Morrison, Veronica Jones-Murray, Dina Myrick, and Natasha Young. I am so grateful to everyone.
