Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ CRU.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My love for music is something that’s in my blood, I guess you could say. A majority of my family are musicians, myself included, and music is just something that’s always been present in my life. The dopest thing about music is its ability to shape and affect different environments, and my high for music is knowing that when I’m behind the table I’m subconsciously and consciously affecting the environment, energy and people around me. For me, that’s what inspires my love for music.
What made me start taking deejaying seriously was my part in planning parties through my fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc, at The University of West Georgia while in college. I became good friends with the deejays that would spin at our events, and eventually over time that I spent with them started becoming familiar with the culture and the art of deejaying.
You can catch me deejaying a wide variety of events today. From corporate events to weddings, private parties and bars and clubs.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely has not been the smoothest road, but I have managed to keep pushing. The biggest struggle for me was to pursue being a DJ as my full-time gig and career. Just coming out of college, I had been preparing to jump into Corporate America for a career in marketing and sales, but my new found hobby turned passion interfered with that. I left a couple of full-time jobs to pursue deejaying and even picked up part-time gigs to supplement my income until I built up my clientele.
Please tell us about DJ CRU (Cru Entertainment).
I am a mobile DJ that specializes in deejaying and emceeing corporate events, weddings, bars/clubs and private parties. On top of providing DJ/MC services, I also have my own speakers, wireless microphones, dance floor lighting, uplighting and more. I’m an open-format DJ, meaning that I’m not bound to just one genre. I’m familiar with Top 40, Pop, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Latin, Afro Beats, Disco, Motown/Soul and much more.
I’ve had to opportunity to perform for a ton of companies and entities such as UGA Athletics, Verizon Wireless, Quik Trip, University of West Georgia, Orchestra Noir, Campus Movie Fest, Agnes Scott College, Tin Lizzy’s Cantina and Invicta Watch Store at the Mall of Georgia just to name a few.
What I’m most proud of is the growth of my brand in such a short period of time. I officially started deejaying in April of 2014 and have had opportunities to meet and perform for people and entities because of my skill and professionalism as a DJ.
I feel that my background and familiarity with different genres of music sets me apart from others from a skill standpoint. There’s no crowd that I feel I cannot entertain, because of all the experience I’ve gained doing different types of events. From a professional standpoint, my background in business allows me to shine in other areas such as communication, handling of contracts and invoices and etc. So I feel that my business acumen and experience as a DJ allows me to stand out.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I don’t know that I would do anything differently per se, because those lessons helped me grow as a DJ and businessman.
