Meet Michael Lindsey of Rosewood.Works in Norcross

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Lindsey.

Michael, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My artistry/business consists of two disciplines: music and film. Right now, film is more lucrative for me; however, I was introduced to music first. I am a classically trained pianist, taking lessons from the age of 7 to 14. At 13, I fell in love with playing the guitar.

Through that instrument, I studied all genres of music from the 1920’s to now. In that process, I fell in love with the band Pearl Jam. That love led me to watching a movie called “Into the Wild” that their lead singer did the soundtrack for.

That movie’s message of escaping from society and following your passions appealed to me so much that I immediately knew I had to make movies. I was about to attend Howard University for Business. Promptly, I changed my major to TV production (it seemed more realistic than film at the time – I was wrong). I gravitated to the role of Director or Director of Photography and have been working on films, TV, and music videos ever since.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
To be honest, I would say it has been a smooth road. There were moments where my goals, at the time, did not work out. However, in hindsight, I found that God’s goals for me were better than my own. For instance, after graduating, I couldn’t find a full-time job. I must have applied to over a hundred jobs during senior year and the year and a half after.

It wasn’t until a company reached out to me and I ended working full-time for eight months that I realized freelance was the way to go. I’m a very positive person, so all of the challenges I have faced are only lessons that need to be learned for me to be better.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Rosewood.Works – what should we know?
My business, Rosewood.Works consists of my freelancing as a Director/Director of Photography/Camera Assistant on Film and Video projects, producing short films, and music. My clients consist of musicians, local businesses and production companies.

For my clients, whether I am the Assistant Camera on a production company’s commercial or directing a music video for a musician, I am completely focused on creating beautiful images and stories that fulfills my client’s purpose.

I operate on the law of providing more in use value to a client than I take from them in cash value. What makes me stand out has always been my ability to make something with a production value ten times higher than what the budget actually is. Lastly, I am always creating as if I am the viewer of the end product. I am constantly looking to create something that would effect me if I were to see it. I ask myself: “Would I buy this product?” “Would I finish this music video?”. Those questions always lead me to the best end product.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Number one, I have to thank God. There are too many factors outside of anyone’s control that I benefit from for any success I have had to be of worldly means.

Of the people who have helped, I have to thank my parents, who have been my main cheerleaders my entire life and have been constantly supportive of me. Also, I went to Howard University, there I met many professors and students that have given me jobs and knowledge over the years.
