Meet Trailblazer Marisa Corcoran

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marisa Corcoran.

Marisa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
With an MFA in Acting from Harvard University, I made my way back to New York City ready to conquer the stage and screen but needed a side gig. A friend suggested I start “writing for online businesses.” I didn’t know what it was but said yes immediately because I knew I could make my own hours doing it along with my other side gigs (yes, I was working three jobs!).

Quickly, I realized that every single thing that makes a woman a terrific, compelling actor on stage makes you an exceptional leading lady for your business.

Here’s a quick story of this in action that involves rolling around a human spine in a suitcase…

As a broke actor playing Dante’s love interest Off-Off (way off) Broadway on 40th and 9th, I also daylighted as an ambassador for a chiropractic office.

Waltzing a science class skeleton in a suitcase into offices like JP Morgan, Deutsche Bank and high-end gyms like Equinox, my close rate was 85%.

Meaning I could get nearly everyone I spoke with to come in for an appointment. Why?

Yes, I believe deeply that non-invasive remedies can reduce the stress impacting nearly every New Yorker. But I also applied the skills I’d learned as an actor when a new person approached…

✔clear intention
✔deeply understanding the ideal customer
✔listening to their pain points and transforming them into possibilities
✔boosting credibility
✔ONE specific call-to-action

Couple this with my own stories and humor so they knew I was a real person (not just a sales bot in a pencil skirt) I brought in loyal customers still showing up a year later.

When I started bringing my skills, sass, and support to coaches and creatives, things like 85% landing pages and $100K launches started happening…

And I’ve gone from (maybe) 50K on my best year to over 200K using these same strategies. I left acting behind an set out to help coaches and creatives do the same for their business using with connected lead generation and magnetic copy.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I first announced I’d be creating The Copy Chat (my online summit on creating kick-ass copy that attracts clients + makes money) and reaching out to experts, I had another copywriter say to me, “You know, I always wanted to do something like that but figured talking about copy would be too boring for people.”

(Cue silence)

For almost a week, I doubted my idea but pushed ahead anyway because I already had confirmed experts/speakers.

The Copy Chat has brought over 40 fellow rockstar entrepreneurs into my life which has turned some of them into clients, given me media opportunities, the gateway to a $40K launch in the spring and a $100K launch this fall, and sincere friendships.

Between both summits, we’ve had over 4500 listeners tune in with reviews that this is the best summit they’ve ever signed up for.

Plus, the experts have added hundreds of excited new followers and fans to their communities and gained clients all by being part of the summit.

The moral of the story: don’t go to the hardware store for milk. Even though this was another copywriter, this person didn’t have the same vision.

Here are a few other things I think you should know, especially as a woman…

You WILL fail — this is something Brené Brown has made popular in her recent Netflix special and I want it tattooed on my body. You can’t avoid failure; it’s like death. It’s going to happen so stop trying to play small in order to bypass it. Play big, fail, and grow from it.

Start BEFORE you’re ready — you’ll never be 100% ready and any big decision should feel scary. (If it isn’t, see tip #1.)

Invest in yourself — the minute I stopped trying to DIY my way through my business, I doubled my income in 6 months.

Collect social proof — don’t be afraid to ask for that testimonial, get a client on video talking about how you helped them. Start this file ASAP.

Create a vision that’s bigger than you — for too long, I just kept saying I want “more money” and “more clients”. The minute I got specific on how many and for how much, and what that money was going to bring to my life, I showed up differently in my business.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Marisa Corcoran Copy – what should we know?
Millennials, listen up! You can create a business you love and pay off that student loan debt (without living off popcorn or moving back in with your parents).

I help coaches and creatives discover what to say and how to say it magnetically attract their dream clients so you can create wealth in your service-based business and pay off your student loan without waiting for politicians to save you, stop trying to consolidate or taking out another loan with a lower interest rate, relying on your partner, or staying in the prison that is repayment plans.

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
The minute I invested in my business, I doubled my income in 6 months and in less than a year, I’ve almost 5x my income. Don’t waste precious time DIYing your way through. Find someone you trust, have major skin in the game and do the work.

For me, I hired my business coach and hired a business manager to start. Then, as I started to see progress, I added a virtual assistant to take over tasks that were sucking my time. Now, I also have an additional coach, as well as a bookkeeper, and adding a financial planner to the mix.
