Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyra Williams.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I always wanted to work in cosmetology. From the age of 4 or 5, I’d have my dolls lined up for their Saturday morning hair salon appointments, so there has never been a period of my life where I wasn’t prioritizing aesthetics. In undergrad, I worked for my best friend’s mother’s salon as a receptionist, and after I discovered the boyfriend at that time has shampoo bowls in his dorm, I started buying professional products from the salon and taking clients in the dorms. That was 10 years ago. So, I moved to LA after graduating from college and getting my cosmetology license and started doing hair and makeup in LA. I worked for BareMinerals, Sephora and MAC, then after I got a freelance gig doing makeup for Revolt network. While working with the Combs twin, celeb stylist KiKi encourages me to start my Instagram page, and my business has been consistent ever since then! I was still taking clients of my own and decided to move my business to Atlanta, where my clientele took off. Now, I take clients at least five days and out of the week and do some freelance set work and I’ve been featured in countless blogs as well as Huffington Post and Elle.
Has it been a smooth road?
The journey has not been linear by any measure! Monetizing your passion, particularly by pursuing entrepreneurship, is a constant challenge. You’re essentially believing in your intrinsic talent to survive. Constantly digging within for inspiration to create for your livelihood, which is difficult for creative people, because inspiration isn’t constant, it’s oscillates depending on your mood, environment, relationships, etc. Having faith in my vision for myself is what I rely on for motivation to excel to in my business. I have a lot of trust in who I was created to be, and that’s always the point I have to stand on when I’m in a lull or uninspired creatively.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am known for creating believable, natural styles that incorporate extensions, and I always try to put a tribal or bohemian flair to everything new I create. I believe that hair should be accessorized and enhanced. That’s what my ancestors did for thousands of years, so I’m essentially just recreating the wheel through me contemporary lense.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Atlanta is the city of aesthetic. Anything pertaining to beauty or cosmetology can thrive here. Consistency and confidence are the main ingredients for creating a lasting business.
