Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Simmons.
Alexis, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It all started with a dream. Like most organizations, our team owner had a dream to make a difference in the community through the lives of the youth. I’m here to support and fulfill our team owner’s dream. I originally came to the team when we were the Georgia Patriots just to help every now and then as a Cheer Coach. I never really expected to be over the entire team it just kind of happened. Last year was my first year as the Cheer Coordinator. It was also my very first time leading and coaching 2 teams in a competition. Last year, our older girls placed 1st and our babies placed 3. Both teams placed top 4 so that was very exciting. This year I’m doing it all over again so this will make two years as the Cheer Coordinator with the same team just with a new name Georgia Cowboys Elite. Compared to last year we are much smaller in size so we’ll have 1 team in the competition this year. However, everything happens for a reason so I believe that having a small team good thing because as a team we’ve grown closer. We’re like a little family.
Has it been a smooth road?
I’d say being with the girls has been both a challenging and rewarding task. For me its finding that balance. Working full time, being in grad school, coaching and living life it’s extremely hard sometimes overwhelming. I hardly ever get a break. I leave work to sit in traffic while heading straight to the field to meet the girls for practice and then, the two days out the week that we don’t have practice I have class or I’m running errands for them. I’ve learned its a lot easier to just adjust my work schedule and everything else that I have to do around the team’s schedule. I coach them, do their paperwork, stay on top of their funds, order stuff so its a lot. Our Team Momager Tee is such a lifesaver. When I need anything, she’s there. Regards to everything, I love all of them and I try to be there for all my cheerleaders. Just as an extra supporter cheering them on. Anything that they invite me to I’m there. All of them know I’m just a text message, phone call or Facetime away.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We have football for the boys and cheer for the girls. With both the football and Cheer program, we strive to provide a safe outlet for both the girls and boys aged 4-12 years old in the Rockdale County community as well as the neighboring counties Newton and DeKalb. Through various initiatives, we teach each athlete the importance of a healthy lifestyle, physical fitness, teamwork, good sportsmanship, and perseverance. Conyers is so small and there is many other little leagues but I think one thing that sets us out amongst others is that we have a staff that actual cares. None of us get paid all the money that gets fundraiser goes right back to the team. We have our differences but as a whole we make it happen for the kids. We invest our own money, our time and support in each child in the program. On game day, they get out on the field and they play, they cheer, they have fun. Of course, we love to win, who doesn’t? But I think the most important factor that we focus on is just being there for our kids.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think where ever the team is located is a good place. With the amazing support or our parents and community supporters and sponsors we’ll make the best of it. Most of us live in the Conyers, Covington area so it’s more convenient.
