Today we’d like to introduce you to L. Loren.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started writing as a child. It started with journals and making up stories that entertained me. I would never show them to anyone, they were just for me. As I got older, I found I enjoyed the writing assignments from teachers and I usually received high marks in Literature classes. In the eighth grade, I read the poem by Langston Hughes called Raisin in the Sun and I was hooked. I started trying to write poetry at that point. Still, I never let anyone else read my words.
In my forties, I decided enough was enough and I found the courage to write my first book. Since then, I haven’t stopped. I now write full time and my life is more fulfilled than it ever was while working a 9-5 job. I am much happier, even if the pay is less, for now.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been smooth. When I first started out, I had to navigate my way through the new world of being an author. It was much more complex than I imagined. I had no idea I would not only be a writer, but I would also have to be an agent, a marketing expert, a CFO and CEO and everything that comes with getting your brand out there for the readers to know who you are.
I chose to self-publish, so I was the only person in the company, which meant if I didn’t do it, it didn’t get done. I had to learn quickly how to operate within this new world and figure out how I fit in. It has been challenging, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. The lessons I have learned and the knowledge I have gained are just the tip of the iceberg. The writing world changes at the drop of a dime and I have to keep up with all of the trends and changes happening around me.
Please tell us about your work.
I write interracial romance books. I have branded my style of writing as LoveRotica, which equates to love stories with an edge of sexy! My stories will always feature a Black female as the lead character. I strive to show not all black women are the same. We are as diverse as the varied hues of our skin tones. When someone reads an L. Loren book, I want them to know black women love hard, we can be vulnerable as well as hardcore. You can’t put us in a box, because we will just cut that sucker open and find our own way!
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have many favorite childhood memories, but the one that comes to the forefront of my mind right now is waking up on Easter Sunday to my mom pretending to be the Easter Bunny. She would prepare baskets for my siblings and me and then deliver them before church on Sunday morning by hopping into our rooms. She always made sure she made enough noise to wake us up. Each basket was personalized for each child. Mine usually had a white chocolate bunny and a book, because I loved to read.
