Life and Work with Sade Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sade Jones.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I think around 8th grade, I had gotten my first set of nails and I fell in love soon after that, it became more of an obsession. I would go on Instagram or the internet to find nail designs and screenshot pictures to take to my nail tech. The older I got, the more I became interested in nails, I had sparked an interest in becoming a nail tech. Whenever I would get my nails done, I would ask questions trying gain knowledge to find out what exactly I was getting myself into and how to go forward but where I’m from there weren’t any schools that offered that program. When I decided on moving to Atlanta, I had set a few goals for myself and being my own boss and starting my own business was at the top of my list. I had looked into a few schools but I really didn’t put much energy into it as I should. Me working 6 days 12 hours, I didn’t have much time to do anything. I had become very unhappy with my job and was ready to step into my new journey. My fiance and I were having a conversation and I was expressing to him how I was unhappy with my job and I was ready for a change. He asked me what was it that I want to do that was going to make me happy. I told him I want to learn how to do nails. He encouraged me to find a school and sign up. I found a school that was perfect for what I wanted to do. I visited the school enrolled and now, I’m a nail tech with my own successful business.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Coming into this business is not easy, I feel like it’s more of a competition. You have to stay grounded and apply yourself daily. This business is more of showing and proving yourself to get people to believe in you. If you’re just starting out, apply yourself and be able to take all types of criticism good or bad use it and learn from it.

Please tell us about I Am Nails.
I’m known for bright colors glitter and bling nails I love to incorporate rhinestones and Swarovski crystals. Putting a smile on people’s faces after service makes me proud. Everybody say I create nail monsters, I give women and young girls a sense of self-confidence when I do their nails. Staying true to myself and creating my own trend and not copying what everybody else is doing is what sets me apart from others.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
There are many people out there who call themselves mentors only to only get your money. Whenever I have free time, I practice and try new ideas that I see or think of until I get it perfect.
