Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Goulbourne.
Stephen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Bronx born and raised! Growing up in New York I was surrounded by art, music, and amazing people from all over the world. New York is definitely a place where one can be themselves and express who they are. I fell in love with art at an early age walking the streets of New York admiring all of the different types of art that this great city had to offer. I seen art as away to tell stories, express feelings, and communicate without using words. At the age of 6, I would try to make art out of anything I could get my hands on. I was proud and in love. There were many ups and downs throughout the years. However, my passion is drawing, painting, graffiti, pasting, using fabric, yarn and whatever else I can think of to make my art come to life.
Has it been a smooth road?
I remember I was in the 3rd grade and a teacher asked everyone what they wanted to be when they grow up and I couldn’t wait to share my career aspirations with the class. Here it came! It was finally my turn and I yelled out that I wanted to become an Artist. The teacher laughed and responded by saying that’s not going to make much money. I was heartbroken. I kept hearing that same response over and over throughout the years. Then eventually I stopped doing art. Years pass by And I remember my daughter was only four years old when I noticed that she drew very well. I started drawing with her. I almost forgot how relaxing drawing was to me. My daughter would always comment and say daddy I want to draw like you when I get older. That made me feel so amazing. How could I expect for my daughter to believe in herself and make her dreams come true if I was doing the complete opposite? Thats when I told myself I wasn’t going to let my dream and passion die!
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am an artist. I love to draw, paint, and explore with different mediums of art. I am known for portraits and abstract paintings using oil and acrylic paint on canvas. I love to collide both realism and abstract elements in my pieces. It allows me to express myself and share how I see the world through my art.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think Atlanta is Dope! I was shocked when I found out how many people here actually appreciate art. There are so many opportunities here for both new and experienced artist. Atlanta has many art shows, live painting events, galleries, art museums and many more. Great place for an artist to network with other artists and to find inspiration.
