Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan McClendon.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started participating in Caribbean Carnival back in 2016. I was first introduced to it in late 2015, where I had the opportunity to shadow two seasoned Mas makers and learn how to create these beautiful costumes from start to finish. My first year participating, I only helped make the costumes because I still felt there was so much I still needed to learn and I didn’t want to rush the process. I knew from the time I started bending wire that this was something that I was extremely passionate about and also something I wanted to pursue. I got my first opportunity to design a full section in 2017 and I was super excited. Soon after I was presented with the opportunity, I found out I was set to deploy to the Middle East (US Air Force). I didn’t let this stop me from taking on the opportunity. I prepared as much as I could prior to me leaving so I had all of my materials with me heading to the desert and I created my first section there. The journey thus far juggling being in the military and a business owner has been nothing short of interesting, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ve been able to apply lessons that I’ve learned in the military to my business and I believe my business is better because of it.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I believe my biggest obstacle on this journey has been self doubt. Early on, I was second-guessing my creativity so much and seeking the approval of others. I was also really concerned that I wouldn’t be received well by the Caribbean community being that I’m an American. But the more I started to believe in my creativity, the less I started to care about those things. What started to matter the most to me was how proud I was of my work. Another obstacle I faced was finding my tribe. It is so important as a creative to surround yourself with people that are like-minded and encouraging. I thank God every day for my mentors Toni & Duana Hyde of Hysis Designs for taking me under their wing and giving me a platform to share my gift with the world.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Amethyst 7 Designs story. Tell us more about the business.
Amethyst 7 Designs is a brand focused on carnival and festival fashion geared to highlight what is unique about each customer. I pride myself on creativity and individuality. With carnival being a pillar of my company’s identity, it is important to me that every woman that puts on an Amethyst 7 piece feels beautiful from the inside out. I believe my ability to help women love themselves a little more and be proud to flaunt what they’ve got makes me most proud as a company. I’m all about empowerment and seeing these women shine in their pieces is a testament to that. Everything made at Amethyst 7 is with love and always with the customer in mind.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe what you call luck, I identify as God’s grace and favor and that has a huge role in my life and my business. God has opened so many doors for me and I am eternally grateful. He has placed the necessary obstacles in my life that I had to go through to get where I am today. Trusting God is my greatest accomplishment to date.
