Today we’d like to introduce you to Larry “Phylle” Carter II.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I moved to Atlanta 15 years ago. I move to work on my craft. I knew there was an opportunity here. In 2007 I financed my own album, titled The One. I worked tirelessly to promote. I did every show, open mic, etc. I went to parties to network anywhere to try to get the music out there. Through my music, I actually met my husband. We met at a music meeting that year. I hit some highs and lows. Lost some friends but hey it’s a part of elevating, everybody can’t come. But in 2009, I had major transitions, I bought my first house in West End cash. That’s when I got involved in community organizing and activism. I grew up a lot lol. I grew in my music too so the second album came. The Coming …. I was coming into my own. Also, I was falling in love. I wasn’t really ready to come out or sing about my love. Fast forward to 2013 when I got married, that was a whirlwind. We didn’t expect what would happen. Before it was legal, we had gotten married and posted it online, and people responded. That took my activism to another level. 2014 brought the web series Boys Next Door, speeches for the freedom to marry then to Hillary Clinton’s campaign to the Democratic Convention. Meanwhile, I got my master and I was teaching full time. That’s what financed my latest project Mr. Carter. It was the project that garnered the most success. Then came the other projects. I had acting roles and then came my biggest role as Darrin in the play Love Sex and Marriage. Darrin is a superstar that has to choose between being a star or coming out. Working with Elevating Voice has been one of the most important things I’ve done. Bring to life characters that help others in different ways.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Boy challenges come with everything every step of the way. I’ve learned to use them as stepping stones. You know, lessons that change your life. Small circles and gratitude for everything you have.
What else should we know?
I sing, write and act. Right now, I just finished a ten-city tour singing and acting in Tre Floyd presents Love Sex and Marriage. I am preparing for a dinner theater on Nov 2 and December 8 Tre Floyd Presents Dear John. It’s a murder mystery. In the spring there will be another play, it will be a game-changer! Stay tuned to www.Trefloyd.com for the announcement. We will bring Love Sex and Marriage back late spring-early summer. It’s a very exciting time.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was super shy. I always felt like an outcast. It’s like I never found the place where I fit in. I was very introverted, music was my outlet. I found a safe space in writing.
