Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine McCray.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My business, TruVision Photography began when I gained an interest in photography from a Photography 101 course taken at Jacksonville State University in 2014. While taking the class, I fell in love with it and decided when the class was over, I would invest in a professional camera. From there, I mainly focused on landscape photography and still subjects. About a year later, my friend was expecting and asked me to shoot her maternity photos. That ended up being my 1st official photoshoot. The experience was fun and very rewarding. After that, I figured I could start taking pictures on the side to bring in an additional income. My 1st customers were mainly family and friends. Eventually, I started receiving referrals and started networking to build my brand.
At that time, I didn’t have no clue of what I wanted to name my business. For a few months, I brainstormed on a business name. I also prayed for God to help me choose a name that describes me, my customer service, and the service that I offer. I wanted to choose something permanent that I would never want to change. Previously, in a dream God had given me the word “Vision”. Of course to me, this was not enough and I wanted to add to it. One day I was listening to the radio and the song “Tru” by Lloyd came on the radio. Hearing that song described myself and the type of business person that I am to be. From then, “TruVision Photography was born.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting and maintaining TruVision Photography has not been all peaches and cream. It was a very tedious process involved. There was a lot of planning, budgeting, saving, and praying involved to startup my business. In the beginning, being able to get prospective customers to take a chance on us was hard. Since we are a new business, people are sometimes hectic and want to know our background, education and or training dealing with photography. Eventually, I made a Facebook and Instagram page and started posting photos and flyers on there so people can see our quality work.
Another challenge has been getting prospective clients to pay my worth. Most people look for the cheapest deal but don’t realize the hard work, expensive equipment, and constant training that goes into producing quality photos.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I could start my business over, there are only a few minor things I would have done differently. Mainly, I would have definitely started my business in my younger years. When I first took that class at JSU and gotten my camera would have been my ideal time. I also would have started out with a more up to date camera that had wifi and bluetooth enabled. Everything else is just a learning process and I wouldn’t be anywhere without it.
