Today we’d like to introduce you to Joel George.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Joel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In late 2005 I got a job for another company doing remodeling. I had some experience doing painting and handyman work from younger in life, but not a whole lot. I learned a lot quickly though and in less than a year decided to start out on my own. I mostly was a handyman/painter at first, but that grew quickly into bigger jobs as well. Partly to stay busy and also to learn I networked a lot. Many times I would take jobs and then hire someone else who I knew did that trade with excellence. They would do that piece and I would watch and learn.
As time went on jobs increased to the point where we were hiring other people to do more and more of the work. By 2010 we had grown enough to where my wife, Carol, and I felt it was time to found Georgia Custom Construction, LLC. Carol has continually helped with the organization and bookkeeping aspects of things while I’ve been more involved in the field and overseeing projects. We have grown steadily in work volume since I started in this business.
Two years ago we felt it was time to move out of our home office into an office/warehouse space in Tucker. About that time we also branched out into hiring more and more staff. At this point there are 12 of us plus a lot of subs in almost every area of renovation/construction. Business has grown even faster since this transition. We are definitely enjoying the relationships we have with employees, subcontractors and our customers. We look forward to continuing to grow while maintaining quality work and a relational feel.
Has it been a smooth road?
We have definitely had bumps in the road. Learning how to manage cash flow while constantly seeming to expand and not having much capital to start with has been very stretching. Also, as we’ve expanded learning how to delegate, maintain quality/excellence, get systems into place, not have balls get dropped has been a real learning curve. The past year has afforded many opportunities to learn and grow.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Georgia Custom Construction – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We do all types of renovations, remodels and repairs. Both residential and commercial, interior and exterior. We specialize in being able to do what our customers need or in finding the right people to do the work that needs to be done. We are very happy to do larger jobs and update or remodel people’s homes or offices, but we also still enjoy doing smaller projects and repairs. Because of this we can be a “one stop shop” for a variety of property needs.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the mix of cultures and people. I love that we are diverse, and I believe we are coming together.
At times I would like to be able to get from “here” to “there” a bit faster and easier 🙂
I love the Falcons, even when they lose.
