Meet Jada Mosley of BlackGate Media in Vinings and Piedmont

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jada Mosley.

Jada, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up, I always had an intense yet broad interest in the arts. Throughout my youth, I’ve had time to explore various tiers of media subconsciously. My past experiences that have shaped my current vision include having leads in local plays, being in a band, writing scripts/songs, creative directing, participating in open mics, talent shows, and political advocacy involvement. Now, what do you do with all that? Entering College in 2015, I had no obvious career path and my interests were too broad and complex to choose an obvious major. At this point, I felt like I had all these puzzle pieces and I was scrambling to put together an image I’ve never seen before. Attending Spelman College, I was able to not only evolve in almost every dimension but explore these avenues narrowing down my search. Fast forward to 2018-2019. By the time I reached my senior year, three things were evident; 1) I have an innate passion for the entertainment industry. 2) Advocating for others without a voice elevated my spirit and 3) No matter what industry I enter or woman I evolve into, I will live a multifaceted existence. My second semester alone revealed my path exponentially. I had the perfect opportunity to blend these three declarations through my senior thesis. As a political science major, we are tasked to research innovative topics that impact political behavior or activity in order to graduate. “Wow”, I thought. “This is my chance to make sense of all these puzzle pieces. I can almost see the bigger picture.” Through numerous sessions with my senior thesis advisor, I finally settled on a topic that would not only fulfill my requirements but my interests as well. My research was centered around the subconscious socializing power of media. It’s difficult to summarize months of research into a few sentences but, I’ll try. I dissected decade’s worth of media (films, TV shows, magazines, music, Ads) and notated how different elements (ethnic notions, stereotypes, minority representation, minority portrayal, trends) have evolved over time. I then took this qualitative research and cross-referenced the data produced by consumers qualitatively to measure the impact media has on the directionality of communities. Wheeewwww. Bear with me. I ultimately found out that there is a direct impact. Media impacts almost every aspect of our lives. We are essentially being conditioned to think, act, live, work….. Exist… In a specific way. Different demographics are being conditioned to exist in different spaces. If an African American boy is conditioned to think the only way to escape his conditions is to go pro, sell drugs or make music… then he will do so. And media reinforces these notions. Generations of this projected caged mindset have and will continue to impact the directionality of entire communities. So how do we break the cycle? We change the narrative. There’s no reason a white middle-class man should tell the story of a minority family in mainstream media. So how do we break the cycle? Educate. Let’s mentor and rally behind our communities and make them aware of different career paths. So how do we change the cycle? We become the change ourselves. My research has made my picture crystal clear. Feeding my passion for media and the entertainment industry, I will study to become an entertainment lawyer and make sure my community is educated on their contractual rights to their art. Feeding my desire to exist multifaceted and to create, I will continue to write, publish, and encourage others to change the narrative with me one page, song, story, film script, and or book at a time. So following graduation, I hit the ground running. I got the opportunity to work as a Public Relation Specialist at an upcoming studio in Atlanta called “Deaf Star). Here I am responsible for curating media to represent our business publicly, but shape the image of the studio in the public eye. I try to encourage everyone I encounter to think big, dream big. I also currently work as a legal assistant at a law firm downtown studying to take my LSAT and apply to Law schools. I also have created a company called “BlackGate” in which I do PR, marketing consulting, and create media through. After becoming a finalist in a statewide competition and getting my writing published, I decided to start my own online blog, raginginsomniac.com, and a tier of BlackGate media. My ultimate goal is to encourage an individual who suffers from any kind of insomnia or anxiety to channel their energy into creative expression. So far, we have posted blogs, received submissions, have a market with items from local creative entrepreneurs for sale, have artists reviews, repost music videos and music form local artists and MORE! I can’t wait to see where my journey takes me next.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not smooth at all, but nothing worth having comes easy. I’d say I struggled the most with being my own team. I’m very creatively inclined with artistic writing, but graphics and website design have never been my forte. I struggled the most with creating my website and getting it up and running. I’m also having a hard time ensuring my content remains consistent due to my hectic schedule. Two jobs and a business is not easy to juggle, but through trial, error, and finding a balanced schedule, I will execute my vision.

BlackGate Media – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
BlackGate Media is a media company that specializes in PR, creative consulting, and encouraging artistic expression. I’m currently doing PR for a local studio and creating my first tier called “The Raging Insomniac”. The goal is to encourage individuals who suffer from any kind of insomnia, anxiety, or just those who doubt their creative ability to feel free in expressing themselves. Currently, we are releasing varying blog posts form artist reviews to poems and politically charged pieces to stimulate the minds of our readers. We also have a market where we have partnered with local artists to sell their products and are attempting to create a supportive artistic community. I personally began writing as a form of expression and release. My goal is to make all my viewers feel comfortable with expressing themselves through art, uplift other whom are doing the same, encourage people to step outside their comfort zone, to educate, and change the narrative! We have voices that deserve to be heard, stories that deserve to be told, a testimony that needs to be heard. So, be true and be you. Someone needs it.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
So far, my proudest moment has been getting my website up and running, being a finalist in a statewide writing competition, getting my work published, throwing my first networking event, graduating, and getting two jobs in my field!
