Meet Tara Low of Guitar Girl Magazine in North

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Low.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Tara. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started my journey back in 2009 when I launched an online retail music store known as Guitar It Up for Girls which catered to young girls and adult women. Along with the retail focus, I had a blog that featured up-and-coming artists and all things happening with women in the music world. The success of that blog led to the development and roll-out of the digital and ultimate print magazine known today as Guitar Girl Magazine.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. As far as dealing with artists and public relations, it’s been great! My contributors have been great, too. Most of my challenges have been technology-related. Someone hacked into our website, both the retail and the ezine, and deleted everything! While I cried, my son, who is a genius at all things technical, worked diligently to restore a lot of it. It took months to get things back up and running smoothly. And, of course, it always seems to happen at the worst time, but I guess, is there ever a right time! We decided to just pursue the magazine, and here we are, back at it better than ever.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Guitar Girl Magazine – what should we know?
Guitar Girl Magazine is the most trusted, relevant, and inspiring female magazine on the market today focused on encouraging, inspiring, and empowering female musicians. I founded it in 2012 to create a community for female players based on the feedback that I gathered from the retail site. I heard the same story from so many of my customers and the artists that we featured. The big box stores and guitar magazines catered to men and they felt neglected.

So I set out on my journey and assembled a great team of knowledgeable journalists with over 50+ years in the music industry. What sets us apart is we are a magazine focusing on women in a male-dominated industry that says, “girls can play guitar!” With this magazine, we regularly provide updates on women in the music industry, interview female musicians, review guitar gear, give insider tips and advice, highlight special features and fun rock lifestyle discoveries all geared to females.

What I’m most proud of is when someone comes up to me at an event and thanks me for what I’m doing in shedding a light on women in music.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Passion. If you have a passion for what you’re doing, it will bring about all the other qualities you will need, which will be the dedication and hard work to keep going when you’re so tired you don’t think you can do it any longer. The tenacity to keep going when you feel you’re being rejected or ignored because that will happen in the beginning. After the hack of both of my websites, I was so down and thought it was over. But the thought of what I had worked so hard for, seeing it destroyed, I couldn’t let that happen. My passion for it brought out the desire and dedication to get it back up and running.
