Today we’d like to introduce you to Daya Lorin.
Daya, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I had been singing in church and writing songs for a while. I wasn’t a well known or highly praised singer. But one day, God challenged me that there was more. He said in my spirit, “You don’t even know who you are.” That started me on a new journey. I decided that I would pursue being a professional songwriter and create a six-song demo using some great local singers I knew. But, God spoke to my spirit that He wanted me to sing the songs! I didn’t think I had the voice for it but I did it anyway. Along the way He then let me know that He wanted me to be a Gospel artist and make a full album from the songs of my heart. From then on, I’ve been an urban contemporary indie Gospel artist.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It certainly has not been a smooth road. I’ve struggled to make ends meet. I’ve had to ask people to “hold” checks until I could pay them. My family (of 5 at the time… there are 7 of us now) and I, at one point, lived in an extended stay hotel for six months while I was preparing to do a live recording. But God is good and was good even when I cried myself to sleep and didn’t know how I was going to take care of my family and make music professionally. Even though I couldn’t see it then, now that I am out of it, I can see His hand, His provision.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
My stage name is Daya Lorin. I am an indie urban contemporary Gospel artist. I have four albums. The most recent, Word of His Grace, was released in April 2019. My single from that album, I’m So Free, has been in the BDS Billboard Gospel charts Top 100. What sets me apart from others is my vocal and musical style. I layer jazzy vocals over rock, pop, R&B, hip-hop, or jazz-influenced music that is all about relationship with our loving heavenly Father, God.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Trust in God is most important to my success. If I follow His way and do what He directs me to do, then I am guaranteed success because I have fulfilled my purpose.
