Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Ruth Pauline Plummer.
Dr. Plummer, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Initially beginning in the beauty industry, following my younger years of pageantry and professional modeling, I quickly developed proper business development and initiatives corporately. Being in the beauty industry exposed me to so many different women of all backgrounds. One sentiment remained constant regardless of the accomplishments of the woman; constantly finding “her” place. I immediately knew my purpose was greater after having strong desires to reach as many women as I could to uplift and empower. I have always carried a passion for the community and helping women identify, nurture and walk out their purpose. It’s the most beneficial way, I have been able to give back and empower other women and families. Covenant Daughters has been in operation for more than 20 years and through my organization, I have birthed many opportunities to aid in food distribution throughout many communities, initiate technology training and provide mentorship to brighten the futures of so many. Creating avenues within the community and television to guide other women into fearlessness has been amazing to watch flourish as I continue to develop.
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Most of the challenges came dealing with the person within. I faced an enormous amount of Image opposition based on both gender and race. I have always been innovation and often times the first in reaching certain levels of success in my chosen field. I have had to learn how to thrive with the restrictions and limitations that were placed upon me. Being that race or gender isn’t optional to anyone, I found myself navigating through the fears and phobias while finding a way to present my value to those that found it to be in question due to gender inequality and race discrimination. I never questioned my talent, ability and professional skills and knew it was necessary to break my own ceilings to supersede my goals.
One of the biggest lessons I learned that apply to all is to not define yourself by limitations or restrictions, but to know your value and recognize the gifts you have within. Master your technique in presenting a way that others can receive and benefit from what you have to bring to the table. Take the time to analyze yourself and find out who you are as an individual. It’s important to know your strengths, areas of improvement, likes, dislikes, mental and physical capacities and preferences. Being very honest and transparent with yourself is a must. Once you navigate these territories, maintaining the proper balancing has always been key in success. Managing motherhood, employees, and volunteers while constantly developing as a leader became quite the challenge earlier on. My role as a mom has always been a top priority. You have such a short time to lay a foundation and fundamentals in their life. Every decision was predicated on my ability to function effectively as a mother. Most women feel as though they have to choose between their goals and careers. I have the key is to figure out how to do both successfully and simultaneously; which is a different recipe for every woman. Focus should primarily be on how to spend your time vs. how to make more money and spend it.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a community organizer, tv host/executive and creator of the internationally recognized ministry, Covenant Daughters. The ability to relate to others and encourage change has been one of my greatest strengths. Giving back in the capacities of food distribution which services more than 800 families (more than 55,000 lbs of food a month) and education assistance has been a great initiative to create the catalyst for change. I reach more than a million households every week with inspirational television content on the largest Atlanta Christian television network. I have been honored to not only host but serve in the capacity of an executive producer. Stretching even further in providing podcasts and shows worldwide. I am most proud of the lives that have been touched and changed. I am also proud of being able to make a mass impact and give other young women something to aspire to that goes beyond their small town or humble beginnings. My ability to relate to so many simultaneously has been one of my greatest abilities and sets me apart from the rest.
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
Being adopted by my grandmother, Mary Conway has always been my first example of selflessness, leadership and targeted guidance. Because of her huge sacrifice, I learned what a strong woman was and how important it is to help others. She laid the foundation for all that I have accomplished thus far. Growing up, Ethel Jean Brown was always who I aspired to be like most. She was a tangible symbol of success within my family. A mother away from home, Sarah Ingram has made an imprint on my life. Providing, nurture, support and encouragement to aid in mastering all that I desired to accomplish. Being on television, watching the journey of Oprah Winfrey has been instrumental in feeling that reaching new heights were attainable. Her journey has been one that exemplifies leadership, mentorship and creating your own opportunities. Additional women in television such as Joyce Meyers, Ruth Munroe and Dodie Osteen that have possessed spiritual guidance as well as strength with the addition of business savvy to break preexisting stats have been an amazing guide to setting future goals and navigating ways to implement innovation.
