Meet Chelsey Nunnery of Her Muse Studio in McDonough

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsey Nunnery.

Chelsey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2012, I worked in Corporate America, it was my safety net. I worked in HR under the SVP. I loved interacting with people but I hated my job. I felt as if my creativity left me a little more each day I went in.

Most weeks, I went into my job and my coworkers would often ask about my hair. I was known for keeping a bomb style! Sitting in my office one day, I thought to myself; why not start a hair company.

And I did! I researched my name, learned how to create websites & graphics, I purchase a camera and backdrops from DIY photography. I formed my LLC and went to work! Within three months, my hair company was earning my yearly salary. This moment catapulted me into entrepreneurship. About six months later, I left corporate America.

Two years into running my company, I begin to want to diversify. I’ve always had a love for people and hair. I wanted to offer a service that would fit into my niche market of protective styles. Enter Megan Good with the beautiful goddess loc style. I was so enamored with this effortless boho style as I’m sure everyone was at the time. I researched her stylist and was led to Dr. Kari Williams: the creator of goddess locs. And I was right on time. She was offering a course on her signature locs. I signed up without a second thought.

After learning the method, I realized through this skill would definitely bring in great revenue, I was unwilling to take 12-14 on one client to complete one install. So, unfortunately, I didn’t offer the service.

Two years later, my cousin’s girlfriend asked If I’d do her hair. She wanted locs but wanted them to be pain-free and lightweight. I ran to the beauty store and purchased everything I could to create my own technique to get beautifully textured locs without the weight and under five hours. After completing her hair, I posted her photos to Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram. I created a booking website and to my surprise, people begin to quickly fill my books.

As I serviced more clients, my books would book out 2, 3, 4 months in advance. The word began to spread and stylists would reach out to me from all over the US to learn my technique! I started teaching classes and then I went on tour to four major cities. Each class sold out.

Now, I do hair part-time, teach and currently planning my second tour. Wow, I praise God for allowing me to use the creativity he has blessed me with.

Has it been a smooth road?
The main struggle I faced has been finding balance. I can be a workaholic but I have an amazing husband and two beautiful kids that must come first. I’ve had to draw clear boundaries around my time and stick to them.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Her Muse Studio – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Her Muse Studio is a protective styling studio that specializes in lightweight, pain-free faux locs. We also offer branding and content consulting to a hairstylist who are ready to go from overworked and underpaid to operating in their uniqueness and attracting dream clients who pay their worth.

I am proud that my company is known for exceptional customer service. Just today my client told me that she had been looking forward to her appointment with me for about four months. She knew she would leave looking bomb and she also knew it was going to be an amazing experience. Great customer service is a rarity in the hair industry right now.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that Atlanta is full of opportunities if you’re willing to work for it.

I could do without it the traffic, lol.
