Today we’d like to introduce you to Stefanie Hughes.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Stefanie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I knew at the age of 19, my path would include behavioral health services. In that first Pysch 101 class, I had answers to questions that plagued me since my teenage years. It was affirming to learn so much about behavior and dysfunction in human connection. This awareness opened more curiosity and a desire to help others never feel like I felt at times growing up. I’ve worked in every facet of mental health services over the past couple of decades to discover that private practice, teaching and speaking are my three true passions. I started my practice some years ago with a partner out of fear of not being able to do it all on my own. The security the partnership offered eventually became an internal conflict with a greater vision I had for expansion. So, in December of 2017, on sheer faith, I stepped out and created, Therapy Offices of Stefanie Hughes on the south side of the perimeter of the lovely city of Atlanta. This year has been a real milestone year because I debuted my first published workbook, I developed a curriculum on self-care and I expanded my brand to include merchandise. 2020 holds a new location and the relaunch of two signature workshops as well as some trainings, workshops and staff with other specialties. My goal is to have services available to meet entire families needs under one roof.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No way, Hosea! My career has had “ roses and thorns” as one of my friends would say. The biggest thorns were and still are critics that can’t catch the vision or simply subscribe to the stigma of mental health. My platform continues to battle the reality of challenging people to NOT suffer in silence. It’s grieving to witness people hurting but because of shame can’t or won’t seek help from a professional. Fear is blocking their destiny and I can relate because it had blocked mine for a spell.
Please tell us about Therapy Offices of Stefanie Hughes, LLC.
I am a licensed marriage and family therapist, sex therapist and hypnotherapist! Of course, the middle specialty always gets an extra wink or wince. Either makes me chuckle. As a woman of color, my culture is not very embracing of counseling as a resource let alone discussing intimacy details. I take great pride in being one of just a handful of brown sex and hypnotherapist in my area. Therapy Offices of Stefanie Hughes turns two in January of 2020 and I’m one excited momma because we will celebrate by opening our new location! What sets me apart I believe is my ability to meet people where they are and I strive hard to be deliberate in creating a space that is not only comfortable but safe and sacred. This allows people to freely speak their truth to learn and grow.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Getting first place in the science fair in 4th grade.
