Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Morales-Smith.
Theresa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a Creative originally from Los Angeles and I attended Cal State Northridge, where I graduated with a BFA with a focus on Costume Design. I started my career in the fashion industry as a stylist, for commercial, music videos, and people that wanted to change up their look. I moved to Atlanta in 2005 and continued to style and also teach at one of our local colleges in fashion design. I began my career in film and television in 2009 as a shopper and kept growing since then, to now be a Costume Designer. I fell in love with Furniture and interior design along the way and in the past three years have added that to my resume.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has been interesting, it’s one of those industries where you have to have thick skin and it is very political. I have definitely been looked over for jobs due to various reasons. But I have learned that every job is not for me and what’s mine is mine.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I consider myself a Creative. I create things through costume in TV and Film, I create through fabrics and textures and ideas in interior design and I continue to expand my horizons in creating new things in different fields so that I can create new references for my expertise in Costume Design.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing! I feel like the road I traveled was the exact one I was supposed to take. I learned many lessons along the way, and it has made me a stronger, better person.
