Today we’d like to introduce you to Kidd Geek.
Kidd, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I had a passion for music as young as five or six years old. I was always free-styling over beats with my brother while my sister sang. Over the years, I rapped with close friends and family. I grew up in a church on Campbellton Rd, where I was very involved in my church choir and other youth activities. One of my friends who was also a member had his own studio in his mother’s basement. Me and my cousins would go over there on the weekends to lay down tracks. Around 2010 black, Que Savage and my self dropped our first project “Skateboard” (prod. By Danny). By 2012, in my last year of high school, we dropped a pretty “popular” track called “Party Started” (Prod. By Dj Spinz) that did pretty well online w/ myspace & YouTube at the time. By that summer, the song got played on & off in rotation at a little club spot called figure 8.
Around 2013 -14, I started doing club promoting with a close friend I know, I figured it’ll help me learn the basics of the entertainment lifestyle. Through the process, I’ve gotten to know and build relationships with many DJs, radio hosts and many others. Around 2015, I “gave up” on music. I was back to doing things I wasn’t supposed to. I got kicked out my pops house, I was staying with another family member. At that time, I was at rock bottom, I didn’t have a dime to my name or even a car to get around. While I was staying with my cousins after being kicked out, I started teaching myself how to engineer music, since I had “gave up”, I was practicing on my younger cousin (Que Savage) songs, we would record in the bedroom closet. By late 2017 early 2018, I started back doing music and release a single called “balanced” (prod. By CamGotHits). The single surprisingly got played on the radio, I didn’t even catch it. One of my homegirls heard it and recorded it on her phone. It was a pretty cool experience, it got me a couple of shows for the time being. After that, over the months, I started working on a mixtape. I never had an actual release date at first I just wanted to drop sometime after my birthday because I was still trying to promo my single.
Some weeks almost a month after my birthday, I lost my younger cousin (que Savage). he was shot to death in a home invasion. It tore my heart, shit it’s still torn because all we knew was each other, our circle is pretty small. I always think about the times, I even help him write some parts of verse to “skateboard”. I think about all da times spending da night over , holidays, church, everything….. but over the past good months I feel like que would want me and the others in our circle to accomplish our dreams, we have a name, a team and standards we live by and I just wanna make him proud. On November 2nd, 2019, I released a mixtape called “Konception Method”. The meaning behind it is me trying new things, like not limiting myself to one style of music. Everything I put in my music has either happened to me, mine around me or I’ve seen it. So, no matter if I rap it or “sing” it, it’s still a story behind it. The project is now available on MyMixtapez.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t. I’ve lost people on the way, some locked up, some in the grave, some I don’t even speak to anymore, sadly.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am an artist, rapper, and engineer.
I am still known for being a “party promoter”. I’m proud to say I’m independent, I don’t have a manager or anything, everything comes from me and me only. What sets me aside from others? I’m not really into all these new generational “waves,” just be yourself!
