Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonja Gibson.
Sonja, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I had fallen down some stairs in Savannah and hurt my back. I woke up the next day and went to get a massage to try to ease the pain. When I got home, I continue going to a chiropractor only for it to help until I got to the car. I had pulled a muscle in my back so bad that I couldn’t pick up anything with my right hand and I couldn’t sleep on my right side. After 3 months of this I had had enough and started the massage treatments. After 3 treatments, I felt 80% better. That’s when I knew this was real! I visited a massage school and 3 weeks later was sitting in class to become a massage therapist. I graduated with honors, perfect attendance and won the National Award to take the National exam as oppose to the state exam. I have worked in spas and chiropractor settings, but it wasn’t until I worked for a chain that I knew where I was supposed to be. I didn’t like the small pay and the “production line” style of massage, so I decided to open my own practice in Fayetteville, Ga so I could help others heal and relax, while giving them enough time during their session to not feel rushed, while helping the therapist to work at a slower pace so they can actually help the clients muscles to heal and have a break as well.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
So far it has been nice. I truly believe that if you are where you are meant to be God somehow blesses you. There are enough people in this world, in this town, for this practice to thrive, even with the other massage places in close proximity. I started looking for a place and within 2 weeks signed a lease, opened 5 weeks from that date and have built a good book in the 5 weeks we have been open. Of course, there will always be struggles in any adventure or business, but you have to ask yourself, is it worth it? Yes, it is! Watching someone walk in here with a walker, working on them for 60 minutes and then seeing them come out with their spouse carrying the walking is so worth every struggle, sweat and tear.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Traditions Massage and Facial Spa – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are a massage and facial spa with full waxing services. I’m not sure we really classify as a day spa, but we do have the relaxing omniscience of one. We have different therapists and estheticians on staff that specialize in different things, but we do have trained front desk staff that can put you with the right fit. We do anything from relaxing to deep tissue, hot stone, claim facials to anti-aging facials. Waxing your eyebrows to everything! We allow 80 minutes to be booked for your 60-minute session so you and your therapist/esthetician have the time needed to talk, tailor your session to your specific needs and then we finish with a nice snack tray with cookies, fruit flavored water. I believe this is what sets us apart from others. knowing your session is about you, your time is not rushed and helping you achieve your goals at a price you can afford is what we are most proud of.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Our plan for the future is to obviously outgrow our current space. We are located in a historic home built in 1890. It still has that historic feel and if we get too big, we may just open a second place. This is like my home. It is beautiful and a very relaxing atmosphere, that I may never want to leave it.
