Meet Jose Villacorta of Villa in North Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Villacorta.

Jose, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I use to want to be a cartoonist as a kid then in high school, I started doing graffiti on backpacks. I’ve always wanted to try out anything that requires me to create something. It’s outlets like that got me through most of my childhood. To be honest, even now, I love Going to the kitchen and cooking. Making something that the people around me get to enjoy. Anyways, when I was 16 I remember I started taking pictures of my friends skating on my phone and I really wanted a camera back then, but I did not end up getting one until I was almost 22. I started meeting people on social media and going out and shooting and then it just kind of went from there.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There’s no way something you find worth doing will ever be easy. It just shouldn’t in my opinion. You find something you love and you just love it unconditionally. Life just wouldn’t be life without struggles. Most of my struggles now looking back on it were within myself. You’re always happier when you do something for you and no one else. There were moments when I lost sight of that and I just kept comparing and thinking poorly of myself. I love to please people and even if that sounds very unselfish of me, it was super selfish of me. I wanted validation and once I realized that I decided to be honest with myself and just do things for me.

Please tell us about your business.
I do freelance. I’ve mostly covered events and Created content for some local businesses. I guess my main concentration is fashion/editorial? So as much as I try to do this for myself and try and not seek validation; I am aware of my ego haha. When clients come to me and say “ this is exactly the vision I had” I don’t know what might set me apart, but to me, it’s the interactions I get to have with my clients. It’s that moment when you realize you didn’t have to exchange words and somehow you’ve both created something that couldn’t be put into words before and you just freaking nailed it.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I try and think about what success might look like everyone else. It’s something that can be measured however you want, but to me, the bottom line is feeling happy and at peace with yourself. Finding something that you love and just blindly doing it. Every day that’s what I try and go for. I wake up and just feel thankful for that. Thankful that people want to actually work with me. Thankful I get to do something I actually love to do.
