Today we’d like to introduce you to Sequoyah Glenn.
Sequoyah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
How I got to SGlenn Consulting was essentially me needing money. I founded my consultancy during my senior year of college at Jacksonville University because I got tired of doing free work that made other people money. Myself and a soror of mine started combining forces – she started her web design business and I started coaching her on acquiring customers and keeping them happy. We then started realizing each of us had something the other hadn’t – where she could design, I could copy write; where she could make logos, I could coach her customers on what is needed in them. BTW – her business is now booming and what’s now known at The Level 8 Agency. So of course, as a young adult, I kind of put my business on the back-burner and fell into the whole ‘Hey, let me pick your brain real quick’ and stopped hustling all the things I knew could make me money. But then, 2017 hit me and I relocated to Atlanta for a promotion and was terminated after about 57 days. I had no plan, no money (pro tip: never take a promotion without a relocation package…ever), and honestly no self-esteem. I didn’t know what to do so I went back to Florida to stay with my ex until I got a job in Atlanta again. During that time, I got bored and was like hmm, I should redo my resume. After I redid my resume, I was like wait – I’m really good at this so, maybe other people need this service, too. So, I put a price on it and took off since. Over the years, my priorities have changed and so has my bandwidth, but the core of SGlenn Consulting is to provide meaningful resolutions to small business owners’ greatest issues: time, capital, and transforming $100K of education & 10 years of marketing experience into meaningful coaching experiences for each of my clients.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth road – um, it’s kind of like driving on 285S where it meets I20; bumpy af. Some of my struggles include customer acquisition; once you exhaust your friend list and networking groups/circles – now what? Another struggle is always balancing a full-time job with my entrepreneurial efforts. For me, I enjoy working as an analyst full time at an ad agency and then doing my passion projects and businesses on the side. However, that means that all of my time is intentional and I tend to not have much wiggle room outside of what’s planned – but thank God for great and understanding friends, family, and therapy! Lastly, my final struggle is myself – so many of us women, especially young women of color, are misled in the thought that we can have it all. And to some degree, we can, but we can’t have it all at 100% all the time. Something will always have to be sacrificed – so choose your sacrificial lamb wisely and be ok in knowing that this lamb may change faces as you grow into your womanhood and walk more closely in your destiny. My advice is to really understand your goal, and understand it often, at the bare minimum, understand it annually. Vision boards and proper goal planning does work – in fact, it works so well, it’s a service I provide to clients and organizations ;). Seriously, my advice is to understand your goal, keep in constant and genuine contact with your network, and never be afraid to pave your own road when the one you’re on get’s too rocky or the route changes.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into SGlenn Consulting story. Tell us more about it.
SGlenn Consulting specializes in ideation and content creation. What the heck is that – um, I’m not sure because it changes all the time! What it means to me right now in December 2019, is to help my clients get all of the thousands of thoughts in their heads, out on paper. It means that we’re going to have some hard conversations, I’m going to ask you ‘why’ probably 1000 times, and I’m going to ask you to think very big. I specialize in resume makeover services, web content development, customer service consulting, and presentation & interview coaching. It all goes hand in hand and allows us to then create dope marketing strategies and ideas to execute on, once the foundation for businesses are laid. What sets me apart is that I love working with small businesses and startups, and I’m not here just for the money. I’ve had gyms, a cupcake shop, several law firms, branding agencies, and non-profits that I can look back and say ‘remember when WE did that… look at you now’. And that’s just a shortlist! I am proud to encourage my clients to dream big and never let an objection stop them. I’m proud when I can see a client go, for example, from a gym in a storage facility to a gym in a highly trafficked plaza. I’m equally proud of the client that goes from doing an art show in a cigar lounge and making very little money, to hosting a solo exhibit at Art Basel 5 years later – those are the moments that make me proud and can say ‘We Did DAT!”
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
The women that inspired my life is my mother and sister; cliche ‘af but it’s SO true. My mom and sister have had some of life’s toughest blows dealt with them but yet they persisted through volunteerism, working consistently, and pursuing education no matter how little time or money they had. Those two women raised me and reminded me that I can do anything I want to as long as it’s legal, ethical, and self-gratifying. They taught me to walk independently, but to also align my resources by forming meaningful and strategic relationships with people and organizations. My mother is a proud Army vet and my sister is a phenomenal RN. They don’t understand my field, and quite frankly I don’t understand theirs– but that’s what makes it work: mutual respect and story sharing to make my next moves my greatest ones.
