Meet Theresa Worthy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Worthy.

Theresa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I think of my life as before my children and after my children. After they were born they took on an infinite starring role even though they’re all grown up now. Six years ago I joined Toastmasters International and discovered that I enjoy public speaking. The pleasure of seeing the eyes of my audience light up with comprehension about a topic they knew little about beforehand, or when they express satisfaction at gaining a new mindset about something they already knew is very rewarding. I was voted best speaker for two years in a row and ultimately earned the Distinguished Toastmaster Award.

I am also a professional member of the National Speakers Association. I help businesses, organizations, and associations by providing strategies to improve interpersonal communication skills, inclusion initiatives, emotional IQ, or upheaval in the workplace. I use the art of storytelling combined with research to customize my speaking topics in order to meet the needs of my audiences. I have also written three fiction novels in the past six years under the pen name Kris Allis. I am at work on a fourth which will is for young adults. My life is full of new purposes these days because I feel as if I’ve entered another chapter.

Has it been a smooth road?
My life has been like most people. It has had its rough, unsteady, rocky, and uneven paths, unexpected forks in the road, and plenty of ‘yellow brick trails’ that all combined to create a full and well-lived life so far. I look forward to continuing a good life, surrounded by the love of my family as I remain motivated and overflowing with my love for them.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a motivational speaker and author. My novels are suspense thrillers as that is my favorite genre. My love for suspense and mystery and sharing a story from beginning to end is transferred to my speeches for I specialize in combining the art of storytelling with research to customize each presentation so that I not only entertain my audience, I also inform them. I am a retired French teacher and I have a true respect for the culture and historical backgrounds of others. I am also certified to teach the gifted. I use my education combined with my expertise as a public speaker to help my clients solve issues in the workplace related to inclusion initiatives; inadequate interpersonal communication skills; low or unsteady emotional levels; or employee engagement.

I am most proud of my experience, my training as a professional speaker, and my community involvement which have qualified me to address inclusion in the workplace. I am an African-American woman who has had my share of exclusion and can fully understand the relief and welcome feelings that come as a result of inclusion. We live in a society where people seem to be taken hostage by electronics, so much so that they have trouble communicating verbally with others. It is only through communicating with others that we make connections and my role as a speaker is to share strategies that allow my listeners to effectively relate to others so as to create a workplace that welcomes all people and where employers and employees are armed with strategies needed for healthy emotional IQ and effective interpersonal communication skills.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like the beauty and the diversity of Atlanta. The thing I like least is the traffic.
