Meet Isis Mayfield of Eyes of Isis in Sandy Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Isis Mayfield.

Isis, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I guess I can say that my story started when I started to take photography classes at my high school in 2016. I was lucky enough to go to a high school that provided many different art classes. During my sophomore year of high school, I started to take photo classes that involve learning film photography and pinhole photography.

As my high school years went on, I started to get really involved with art opportunities that were provided at my school such as participating in photography exhibits and attending art conferences. So it wasn’t until my senior year of high school when I started to learn digital photography and find my passion in taking pictures. I felt like I truly found something that I enjoyed and something that I finally saw myself improving in.

During this time, I started to take pictures that weren’t just for my photography classes and started to take more pictures for personal reasons. After graduating high school in the summer of 2018, I started to do photoshoots with new people and started to network within the photography world. Towards the end of that year, I started to focus on bigger goals for myself that would advance myself as a photographer and as a photography business. So right now, I am managing my own portrait business and working as a photo editor for student media at Georgia Southern University.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have had a couple of struggles and obstacles along the way. Although I wouldn’t say that these obstacles were typical obstacles, they were more of how I see myself within photography. One of those struggles was realizing that I was getting caught up in doing photography for social media reasons and for other people. In the process of realizing that, I now only create for myself and for the people that I work with. This includes what inspires me and my client’s vision rather than just taking pictures for people on social media. My struggle right now is figuring out piece by piece how I can exactly match how I envision my photoshoots to go with the actual result of the photoshoot.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
As a photographer, I mainly do portraits, events and conceptual photography in the Atlanta and Savannah area. I do my best to create photos that match my client’s vision and my personal vision.

I am mostly proud of how I am able to manage a photography business on my own while being 19 and knowing that I have many big plans in the near future. I am a person who is determined in advancing my photography skills and growing myself in order to be a successful person.

What were you like growing up?
While growing up, I would like to say I was the kid that loved doing a lot of creative activities and doing a lot of things that were outside of my comfort zone. I learned to play the guitar and learned to sew at a young age. My parents raised me to be a person who works hard in everything that I do, be friendly to anyone that I meet and keep an open mind in the things that I experience. So I always worked hard in school while also trying new things such as playing lacrosse and traveling to different places.
