Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Patterson.
Aaron, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Born and raised in Massachusetts, I remember being in the third grade and looking up to all the different high schoolers at my local church, every Sunday after service I would watch them freestyle in the parking lot and I’ve been in love with Hip Hop and making songs ever since. Over time football started to become my main focus so I would still write for fun but for the most part, I put my dream of being a rapper on the back burner. It wasn’t until 2009 when I realized I wasn’t going to the NFL that I decided to record my first song and pursue music. Chasing success was my addiction, I became obsessed with being rich and famous, partying, doing drugs and even selling them. I was stuck between two worlds, my church roots and my love for what the world had to offer me, this conflict within myself made me find my identity in being an artist. In five years, I released five projects, got tons of paid gigs, opened up for national recording artists like Kendrick Lamar but deep down, I was empty.
March 2015, I made a decision to take a break from music on focus on the Lord, this decision lead me to Atlanta in 2016 to attend ministry school and join City Takers ran by Scott Free. Taking time off to find myself and get rooted was the best choice I ever made because now I’m focused with a purpose. 2019 was amazing, I dropped four songs, got engaged, married and now I have a baby on the way by the grace of God. 2020 is about to be my biggest year ever because I have people in my corner and music that will shake up the world.
Has it been a smooth road?
My road up until now has been everything but smooth but I wouldn’t change a second, it made me who I am and built my character. It makes it easier to relate to people who are struggling and at the bottom, I’ve felt their pain, I know what they’re going through. My family had the unfortunate situation of being homeless for two and a half years and it was rough, family of six living in hotels, with family friends, and even in our van for a couple of days. We had no choice but to have faith and lean on God through our struggles. Also being arrested and put on probation was the biggest blessing in disguise of my entire life, it woke me up and made me realize I wasn’t invincible.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like best about our city is the community and the music scene, everybody is real humble and when you go out there no telling who you’ll run into. What I like least about Atlanta is the traffic that junk gets on my last nerve.
