Meet Seketa Bing-Nelson of Nelson’s Counseling and Wellness in Savannah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Seketa Bing-Nelson.

Seketa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My passion for mental health therapy started after dealing with my own struggles with Depression and Anxiety as an undergrad at Paine College. I would always find ways to feed my spirit with positive self-talk in efforts of preventing my own casualty. After receiving my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Paine in 2003, I returned home and began working in the field of social science. I’ve had the opportunity of working in every entity of Social Science in Savannah prior to pursuing my Master’s in Professional Counseling which leads me to my current career as a Licensed Professional Counselor.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road was definitely not smooth lol, there were man bumps and potholes along the way. I struggled financially, emotionally and mentally. There were many times I wanted to walk away and pursue a career less rewarding that did not feed my passion but would provide the monetary gain to care for my then infant child.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Nelson’s Counseling and Wellness is a private practice offering individual, family, group and couples counseling. As a mental health therapist, I specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Mindfulness training. What makes Nelson’s Counseling a distinguished practice is the connection between mental illness and the African American community. I’m most proud of the countless number of community outreaches completed to address the suicidal crisis and bullying amongst our youth. What sets Nelson’s Counseling apart from the others is the ability to provide our clients with natural alternatives to manage symptoms of most mental illness decreasing and/or eliminate the need for psychotropic medications.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Most definitely, mental health awareness is needed everywhere and most people don’t know how and when to start. There is a huge stigma associated with mental illness primarily in the African American community that needs to be addressed. Atlanta is definitely the hub for those interested in pursuing a career in mental health therapy.
