Today we’d like to introduce you to Rob Hooper.
Rob, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always loved music. As a kid, I would write songs and I began playing piano at age 12. Around age 15, I started helping out in the media dept. At my church where I began to learn about live and broadcast audio mixing. From there I knew I wanted a career in music. I didn’t know exactly what that could look like. After High School I tried college for a year but I didn’t truly feel like it was for me, so I left and started working. I began to produce music and write songs to release as an artist, but as I began to accumulate equipment, I realized that I truly enjoyed the process of music production, whether it was my music or not. I had a small home studio where my wife and I would record with friends, and in January 2010 everything changed. My wife was seven months pregnant and I lost my job due to declining sales. At the time, I didn’t know it, but it was probably one of the best things that could have happened to me. I began to advertise my studio services while also working at Zaxby’s to make ends meet.
Meanwhile, my skill sets and confidence in my abilities were growing. It was tough, but my beautiful wife supported me every step of the way. Today we are blessed to serve over 160 clients. Our work has heard around the world and has even reached some Billboard charts.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth is not the word I would use. Many times I’ve wanted to give up and work a 9-5. There’s a stability that comes from having a job. You “know” when you’re going to work and you “know” what you’re getting paid. When you work for yourself some weeks are great and others are pretty dry. There is a lot more involved than just showing up. A big struggle for me was setting up our booking/cancellation policies and sticking to them. Clients sometimes don’t understand that to run a business there has to be rules and standards in place. So you have to be the enforcer and the helper at the same time.
We’d love to hear more about your music.

I would say thoughtfulness. We try to be thoughtful and considerate of our clients needs. We put ourselves in their shoes and think, “How would I want to be treated if I was booking a studio.”
