Today we’d like to introduce you to Quintin Crumpler.
Quintin, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a young child, I can vividly remember sketching designs and tracing shoes out of the Eastbay catalogs our family would get. I’ve always been intrigued with various patterns, textures, and colors. Putting those three elements together for an outfit came easy to me. I knew that I would ultimately want to create my own lifestyle brand. I launched a t-shirt line 13 years ago while in college and learned a lot from that experience.
Because my ultimate goal was to create a full lifestyle brand, I began to study the greats as a foundation while continuing to cultivate my craft. In addition, I began to study manufacturing processes, sourcing fabrics and began to build meaningful relationships with people that I believed could add value to my vision. I knew that my point of view and vision of how certain garments should look was missing from the market. After testing out multiple samples, I launched GOAT by James King in November 2018.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but I believe that challenges are needed to cultivate character. Each obstacle/challenge I overcome helps builds confidence to attack the next one. Some challenges I have experienced is finding manufacturers who’s quality, price, and turnaround times align with my standards. As I stated before, building relationships are key and being able to articulate expectations and exactly what you need upfront is paramount.
GOAT by James King – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a clothing brand that specializes in modern takes on classic lifestyle clothing. I’m known for using high-quality materials, blending/mixing fabrics, and providing an opportunity to express greatness through style. I’m most proud of GOAT by James King being grounded in my faith in God. I consciously make decisions regarding the brand to ensure my principles in Christ are not compromised. I believe what sets GOAT by James King apart from others is the ability to create unique pieces that have the perfect balance of a classical look with modern influences. In other words, my designs are relevant today and will be relevant 50 plus years from now.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally define success in being able to provide for my family today while leaving a legacy for tomorrow. Being present with my family is very important to me. Not just in the physical sense but being able to nurture with love, care, and guidance. Building this brand will ensure that I have something tangible to leave my kids.
Business-wise, obviously, the financial balance sheet is a part of success criteria. But beyond the finances, reaching people from different walks of life that share similar style sentiments as I do, hearing their stories, and being able to inspire my generation and the next are markers for me.
