Meet Zeborah Ware

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zeborah Ware.

Zeborah, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Hi, my name is Zeborah Ware and I am a Special Education Teacher, Published Author, Hair Salon and Boutique Owner. According to society, I should have never made it from a small town called Lanett, Alabama. My dad was incarcerated when I was an arm baby, so I was raised in a single parent home with my mom and brother. We didn’t have much growing up, but my mom worked tirelessly while attending school to provide for my brother and me. Because of my poor home life, I developed low self-esteem issues that affected my entire life. In middle school, I would often get teased about being black, fat, and having really short hair. My grandmother used to encourage me by saying, “Comb your Lil hair, brush your Lil teeth, and wash your Lil face.” Check out my book on Amazon, “The Ultimate Guide to Owning It.” Her words made me feel worthy and beautiful. I’ve always had big dreams for my future. However, my self-esteem issues made me feel like they were impossible to reach. After years of my grandma’s encouraging words and watching my mom “slave,” I began to truly love myself and think of ways to overcome my adversities. This is when my entrepreneurial spirit took its course. I have always had a passion for helping others and doing hair. My cousin Seterra helped me to learn how to do my own hair. She did hair for everyone in the family. I then later realized that doing my hair was my escape. If my hair was done, nothing else mattered. LOL!

In 2016, with only $700, I opened my very first hair salon, “Zazzy Beauty Bar.” At that time, I knew nothing about running a successful business. I watched my favorite girl boss Ming Lee, bounced ideas with my cousin Moesha and turned to my mom to figure out the right side to everything. I used Facebook as my way to market myself, build my brand, advertise, and promote myself to everyone. Within just seven months of being in business, I made over $30K. I couldn’t believe it, but as I reflected on my life, I knew I had to make my business work for me. I am not the smartest or the prettiest girl in the world, but my hard work and dedication helped me to create a life that I wanted and help others along the way. My goal for my salon then and today is not only to provide quality service and products but also to help and inspire and motivate young girls who were just like myself.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This road has not been easy. Because of my past self- esteem issues, I was terrified of not being accepted. I didn’t want people to think that I thought I was better or even say, “I’m doing too much.” Unfortunately, they felt it and said negative things anyway. Along the way, I started to strengthen my relationship with God and continue practicing self-love, which helped me to overcome the idea of worrying about what others would say. It was also tough and time consuming going from my full-time teaching job to doing hair after schools. There were many nights when I wouldn’t get home until midnight and had to do it all over again the next day. It indeed required considerable dedication and perseverance. Another struggle for me was not falling into the trap of what everyone else was doing. This is a huge mistake that most new business owners make. I had to constantly hold tight to my reason for why I started so that I was able to remain authentic and not just do business for the money. I have a real passion for hair, fashion, and helping others. I knew this road called business wouldn’t be easy, but hey the way called life isn’t either. I had to push through my adversities, my struggles, the naysayers, to create the life and dream that I wanted to live.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

My family, friends, clients and customers are my biggest supporters and cheerleaders. My business would not be as successful without them.
