Today we’d like to introduce you to Yifei Wu.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Yifei. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My father was an artist of traditional Chinese art. However, after I birth, he chose to be a worker in a factory because art is hard to get money to family. My father taught me a lot of stories about art and working class, and I always interested in these stories, so I chose to combine them together when I was an undergraduate student of art. My current body of work utilizes creative language to explore situations and relationships between workers in a modern manufacturing environment and to show those who are not yet aware that their lack of a voice in society can change. By realizing that they must improve themselves in their own capacity, they can assert themselves and change their current status and situation
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It isn’t a smooth road. My topic is about working class, it is difficult to build a real relationship with the working class. I did three fieldworks, two were in the China, one was in Atlanta, I hide my identity that I am an artist and became a worker in the local factory. When I did fieldwork, I tried to be a friend with other workers and became one of them. After we became friends, they shared their stories with me, so I realized their problems and hard situation from these stories.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
The proudest of my business: I use my artworks to let more and more people take care the working class’s hard situation and problems. No one like me, I am not like other artists who just stay in the art world, I have real experiences of a worker because I am a worker. When audiences go to my art show, see my works and talk to me, I always share my personal experiences and feelings of a worker.
