Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Lacy.
Brittany, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a parent, we are often ripping and running with work, school, kid activities and just life that we sometimes overlook the quality moments. For me, my daughters have always been my heart and as they grow older, I had to find new ways to connect with them. So one day we were riding on the train to NYC with my best friend Ree to spend the day in the city and I was thinking on the ride which is often when I have clarifying moments. We came home and I told them I have an idea. Let’s bake! We LOVE sweets. So we could bond and spend family time baking.
We dance, laugh, play, and just have a mellow vibe going on. Well, use baking turned into me posting on social media and then the next thing you know, we got a couple of orders that came in. So this birthed Messy Treatz. The name comes from the girls as they are both MESSY as heck. Baileigh “the youngest” is my daughter that we can’t get out the house without her spilling something on herself. I would literally not get her dressed until we either got to the event in the car or she had to be the last one to get dressed after we were all ready. Neille is the MESSY cook. lol… She will make a whole mess in the kitchen and look at me like I was cooking mommy.
The girls love cooking and this is a way for us to unwind and be as creative as we like and as messy as we want to be. So now are currently doing Pop Up Shops around the Washington DC area and looking to expand to different areas of the next 2-3 years. This process I’ve kept them in the loop with scheduling, business-minded thinking, branding, and learning the road of entrepreneurship. While having fun along the way! My goal is to make sure they grow into intelligent, well-rounded women.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road started off as a cakewalk… It has been fun. It has been challenging at times along with some longs nights for me. Since we started the business has been an addition to what we already have going on. I work full time and the girls are in school as well as after school activities. So on nights when we would get orders, I would be up all night and they would help until they got sleepy and left me lol. And if it wasn’t for the help of Ree I would be late to work almost everyday. She’s behind the scenes helping with deliveries and making those last minute runs to help me with an order. It’s truly a family business.
Some days are really fun and creative and other days are long. But I wouldn’t trade it. We went to do an interview on Next Level Radio a couple of weeks back and I remember getting in the car and Neille said, “Mommy! This is real, we are doing it. I’m so excited” and it’s these little moments that steal my heart. To watch our hard work come to fruition that makes the long nights worth it. But otherwise, everything else is really good.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Messy Treatz story. Tell us more about the business.
Our business offers a wide range of desserts. However, our moist cupcakes are our speciality. Oh and our Bananas Be Messy Cups (Banana Pudding with Chessmen Cookies with creamy Banana pudding topped with our signature frosting)
Neille’s favorite cupcake when we first started was the strawberries and cream. As of today, her favorite is the Cookie Dough Bandit. Baileigh’s favorite cupcake use to be our Oreo Overload cupcake. Now hers is out Messy Fetti cupcake. We are most proud of the products that we provide. They are all made with love and attention to detail. We’ve prided ourselves that no matter how many times you come to visit us, you will get the same great tasting cupcake each time.
We did a pop-up show in The Mall in Columbia during the holidays and people walked past our table like these are really pretty cupcakes and would purchase one as a way to support. We watched as they left to sit and eat a quick bite and proceeded to eat their cupcake. Moments later, they were back to purchase a six-pack of cupcakes to take home. This really made us smile and laugh.
What sets us aside from the rest. With us, you always get personal touches. We always reach out during the cupcake process to see if you have anything you want to add or make changes to. Great Customer service! (I’ve worked in customer service for years and I always want to make sure that our customers are treated the way we want to be treated going into any establishment) We want to be your neighborhood dessert stop.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Prayer! A lot of prayers. I would like to say luck is on our side but the initial support started with close friends and family that saw the vision. And now with us expanding to the mall, we have been fortunate enough to start gaining more business. It’s very small and intimate because you get those personal touches.
After every order we post and we say thank you! We are very appreciative for everything. The girls being able to see first had what it takes to build your business from the ground up. It gives them a different kind of appreciation.
