Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Candice Cooper-Lovett, LMFT.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I moved down from Buffalo, NY to Atlanta in July of 2014. I was not sure about what I wanted to do in the future when it came to my career. I took a position at a community based agency as clinical director but I was not satisfied. I went to a CEU training where I met one of my now friends, Dr. Tequilla Hill-Hales, and she was talking with me about private practice and why wasn’t I pursuing that being that we had the same credentials. From that point, I began to research how to start private practice and started a business plan and had a goal to begin my practice in 2015. In March of 2015 I opened the doors to my new practice!! Things were slow initially but over time it grew more and in January of this year I took the leap and decided to do my private practice full time and it was one of the best decisions that I had ever made.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I wish it was a smooth road but I feel that it has made me grow and become more knowledgeable and stronger as a result of the struggles. I would say that in mental health if you’re going to get onto panels there are a lot of learning lessons involved, and some money that was lost as a result. I had to learn the hard way with regards to billing issues as well as last minute cancellations and no shows. I also learned not to overwork myself when I was working full time as clinical director and doing private practice I found myself being exhausted a lot and did not have a lot of time for rest which I realized was affecting my work. I also had to come to find that I had to respect and trust my own process with my business and not compare it to other people’s businesses and where they were at the times of where I was at the stage and year of my business.
We’d love to hear more about your business.

I have worked extensively with sexual abuse survivors, domestic violence survivors, youth witnesses to domestic violence and youth who have endured sexual abuse. I also work with couples who struggle with connection, trust and communication. I am known for my work and expertise in domestic violence and sexual abuse/assault. I am also in supervision to become a certified sex therapist.
I am most proud of the fact that the clients I serve feel my warmth, professionalism, and providing them with a safe and therapeutic environment which could help them to initiate empowerment, healing, and growth. I am also proud of the fact that the majority of my practice are first timers and I have the opportunity to show them that therapy can be very healing and a positive experience. It also gives me the opportunity to destigmatize mental health for the Black community.
I feel what sets my company apart from others is the fact that I focus extensively on trauma which is a topic area a lot of therapist do not venture off into, especially domestic violence and sexual abuse. I also work with couples who have violence in their relationships.
What were you like growing up?
As a child growing up, I had very humble beginnings. I was and still am very sweet. I was also very quiet and did not say much and I was also shy, which is interesting being that I fell into the field of mental health where you have to do a lot of talking, but as I got older I came more into my own and became more comfortable with my power and voice. I was always the smart quiet girl at school. I was a 5-star student in 3rd grade and was the only one in my grade to have that accomplishment. At the time, I was interested in becoming a pediatrician, in high school I was a biochemistry major with the hopes of going to college then medical school but I began to take an interest in psychology.
