Meet Ana Medina, Christopher and Zachary York of Kung Fu Tea – Battery Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Medina, Christopher and Zachary York.

Ana, Christopher and Zachary, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The Kung Fu Tea team started with a simple idea to bring a favored bubble tea brand to college students around the Atlanta area. Through our research, Georgia Tech and Emory University had the target audience for our product and were far enough away from franchise locations to warrant a solution. Instead of trying to open a stand-alone store, we thought of a way to bring bubble tea to Atlanta college students, through the use of a food truck! We began the design process for our food truck and about 80% through this process, we got a phone call.

The Atlanta Braves were looking for a bubble tea store to open in their new ballpark surrounding block called the Battery Atlanta. There was an opening within a food hall, with just enough space to fit another vendor and the opportunity seemed too good to be true. We went with our gut feeling, designed our store, and opened to the public on February 1st, 2020.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
With opening any first business, there are expected struggles, but we felt our journey had been particularly riddled with adversity. Our initial idea, a food truck to delivery bubble tea, was the first of its kind. There weren’t any cheat sheets on how to pack a full bubble tea-producing store into the confines of a food truck. We worked for months trying to mend the design requirements from our corporate office with the constraints of a food truck manufacturer.

After we received an offer to join on as the final vendor within the Ph’east food hall in the Battery Atlanta, we thought things might be moving much more smoothly but again, we were hit with waves of hardship. We were asked to fit into a space that rivaled Kung Fu Tea’s smallest location with sharing the infrastructure of an entire food hall. Throughout the design and construction process, we were working with a shared management group and construction firm that did not share our same image of our store and we had to adjust our dream to fit their reality. No one wants to forfeit any element about their dream, which made this process particularly difficult. One way or another, we made it to where we are today by overcoming these adversities, and we’re ecstatic to finally be up and running!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Kung Fu Tea – Battery Atlanta – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
