Today we’d like to introduce you to Jelissa Brown.
Jelissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Having a skincare business, let alone being an entrepreneur, was never in my plan. I always knew from an early age that my purpose in life through God was to help elevate people by maximizing their health. So I chose to pursue a career in the healthcare field. What I didn’t know was that skincare would also be apart of my journey in fulfilling that purpose.
From a teenager, I took a special interest in my skin and how to take care of it. As I got older, my interest in wellness and healthy living grew and I became very familiar with natural ingredients and how they impact our bodies.
I began by spending many hours researching and reading different books. I first learned the science behind skin and then what was required to nourish the skin. From there, I formulated and tested different recipes to figure out what worked best. I made my first set of body butter at my grandmother’s house in Merritt Island, Florida surrounded by family and positive energy. Countless hours went into creating everything from my business name to product labels up until my grand release.
By March 1, 2019, my online shop went live and sold out of body butter within a week. Since then, I have ventured out and learned how to make natural soaps and emulsified exfoliating scrubs. The support I’ve received since day one has been mind-blowing and so fulfilling. I owe the hugest thank you to everyone that has supported me thus far, especially my family, friends and my amazing customers. I honestly cant wait to see what 2020 has in store for JB Skin Essentials.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all, but it has been very rewarding. The crafting of my products came naturally, but I didn’t know anything about entrepreneurship. Thankfully Jewels, an entrepreneur of many years, took me under her wing and mentored me. JB Skin Essentials was created with very little money, which put a limit on what I could do. I taught myself how to do everything because, at the time, I couldn’t afford a graphic designer or other business expenses. Even though it was a struggle to create these things on my own, this journey has helped me to improve certain skills and also understand the different roles in a business.
Please tell us about the company.
JB Skin Essentials is a plant-based skincare company that provides natural essentials for the skin. Our mission is to create and provide effective skincare that nourishes the skin, free of synthetic fragrances and harmful toxins. Our products are 100% natural and handcrafted with ingredients sourced only from nature. My customers love the lavender peppermint body butter and our turmeric orange soap right now.
JB Skin Essentials is different from other skincare companies because I don’t use fragrances. Instead, I have incorporated aromatherapy into all my products by using essential oils. As the Founder & CEO of JB Skin Essentials, I am most proud of bringing awareness and expanding knowledge about natural skincare. My customers are in love with the way my products make their skin feel. I take so much pride in knowing that I’m helping people feel good and achieve healthy skin without the use of harsh chemicals.
